Joseph is too busy sawing wood, and Mary’s too soft hearted to show him tough love.

But she still nags him — “why can’t you be more like Jesus?”

Dwayne was a down to earth fellow. Didn’t have a God complex and had to put up with Mary doing the holier than thou, Madonna act. The virgin claim was getting old too.

For those interested, Wikipedia also has another Elsheimer painting, along with its detailed image, of this scene, painted (if all is correct) about 10 years later on a different medium. The source says its a “small cabinet painting, on copper like many of Elsheimer’s works”, and doesn’t mention the 1600 painting, or have it among its Elsheimer’s. Its painting has a much darker interior. Like the one here, it’s at Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, Germany. I hope the one here hasn’t been (Image > Adjustments > … ) Photoshopped. Only work by this artist used so far in Mr. Melcher’s blog.

if I rightly recall my 9th grade Latin text, Phil & Bauc were kind to Zeus & Merc, who were checking out homo sapiens by travelling incognito together – kinda like divine “mystery shoppers”. They were therefore spared the great flood sent to destroy naughty mankind. Afterward, humanity was “reconstituted” when P & B were told to turn over stones, which then became humans – thus explaining our presidential aspirants. Thanks again, mab, for your meticulous research, and Baslim: the goose answers the great Latin question “quis custodiet custodies?” (who will guard the guards?). The GEESE guard the guards!

Ave, Baslim! That story, entitled “Anseres Sacrae”(Sacred Geese), was also in my Latin text. The invaders were Germans, I think. I’ve never read a Falco, but you might like E.B. White’s “Andivius Hedulio”, if you can find it.Guarding geese must be like herding cats – definitely a job for a slave.Vale, pro nunc!

“Dwayne, why can’t you pick up after yourself? This place looks like a cyclone hit it! Oh, and as your mother, I have to say how embarassed I am! I heard from the neighbors today that you’re going around bragging about your cock! Why, what would Jesus do?”
