Pat was great but he’s gone. Steven’s picking up the baton, someone has got to do it.

Pat was great, but Steven is certainly as great and certainly grander. But I do get the humor and the slight (to Steven) was necessary to make the joke work.

For those who live in South Carolina:Colbert can’t get on the ballot so he asks you to vote for Herman Cain, who is still on the ballot.Independents can vote in the SC primary. (not in FL)

From Pat Paulsen’s obit. in 1997…..

Mr. Paulsen became a household name in 1968 when he announced on ‘’The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour’’ that he was running for President under the Straight Talking American Government Party, or the S.T.A.G. Party.

The joke took on a life of its own, as he campaigned in one election after another, using slogans like ‘’We Cannot Stand Pat,’’ ‘’We Can Be Decisive, Probably,’’ and ‘’United We Sit.’’ At last summer’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, he promised: ‘’If elected, I will win.’’…….

Colbert carries on the tradition of Paulson. Newt and the Republicans seem to carry on the tradition of Jefferson Davis.
