    Authentic insect drawings. Actually, I hate ants because they are not real individuals – they are only part of the organism which is the COLONY – that includes the egg-laying machine we call the queen.

    In the developed world. In other countries, they are cheap labour first and foremost.

    That doesn’t mean that Calvin shouldn’t be taught responsibility and given a work ethic. Calvin’s problem is that he has such an entitled attitude that he can’t see past his own needs and wants to realize that other people have needs and wants, too — and sometimes, their needs and wants are more important than his!

    People, people!!! You’ve completely missed a perfect opportunity to get into a rough-and-tumble political spate of name-calling and jeers at each other about those who siphon off ‘the system’ and those who provide… “The Ant & the Grasshopper” …remember???Hm… Maybe the trolls trundled over to LuAnne..let’s see…..

    1a: Yes.

    1b: No.

    Essay: I answered this way because I have children and have no idea where some of their stuff comes from.

    Extra credit: Evaluation: How funny!

    So, what’s my score?

    I think it’s quite fitting in light of the outrage of those who are sceaming because now they might have to contribute to the payment for their healthcare (especially when they go to the ER). I do feel for those who are actually going to have trouble paying it (but that has largely been taken care of by the Bill itself), but I have no sympathy for those who simply want to bilk the rest of us into paying for their irresponsibility. Just like Calvin in the last panel.

    1a. Are human children really “individuals”?

    1b. Are human children merely “parts” of the “hive(s)” we variously,call, “family/clan/tribe/state/nation”?

    Explain, in 2,500 words or less, why you answered question one (a or b), the way you did.

    .

    For Extra Credit: Evaluate the comic strip, “Calvin and Hobbes”, as an adjunct text for this course.

    ++++

    1a. Yes, in part:

    Human children are individual persons, who even before birth show individual preferences and personality. This grows over time, especially as they live in community (not a hive) such as a family, and learn to take growing responsibility for themselves and for others who need their gifts.

    Extra Credit: Calvin is amusing because his primary community is formed with his Tiger, Hobbes, and they are both dependent on their family, with Hobbes tending to show a more developed sense of responsibility and morality. Calvin is a perpetual young boy, about age six or eight, and his entitlement and frustrations are funny because they do not change; in the real world, this would get old after, say, three or four years, and really old when he hit adulthood.
