You have to admit that even for a GOP politician, Newt takes hypocrisy to a whole other level.

The AP, Dec. 8, 2008: Freddie Mac enlisted prominent conservatives, including Gingrich…paying each $300,000 in 2006, according to internal records.….Gingrich: I offered advice. My advice as an historian when they walked in and said we are now making loans to people that have no credit history and have no record of paying back anything but that’s what the government wants us to do.

I said at the time, this is a bubble. This is insane. This is impossible. It turned out unfortunately I was right.

I keep hearing people say that Newt is so smart, but where’s the evidence? He’s never seemed all that smart to me. What am I missing?

Well, I read your link. Here’s an interesting passage from it:“Perhaps most curious is Gingrich’s fascination with quantum physics.“To understand fully the future impact on nano-science, and it will be significant, I felt it imperative to try to understand the basics of quantum mechanics,” he writes. So, from late 2000 to early 2001, Gingrich read several books on the heady subject.Summing up Richard Feynman’s “QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter,” Gingrich writes: “Feynman’s argument is that quantum behavior is truly outside the Newtonian principles of classical physics and contradicts our understanding of the world as we experience it at our large, bulky level.”“I strongly recommend it,” he ends.”Wow. Quantum behavior is outside the Newtonian principles. I’m really happy to hear that Gingrich has caught up with first year physics. (Actually, I learned all that in high school, but we had a good school system.)Not very impressive so far. But I’ll check out one of his books, if I can find one. Do you recommend any in particular? I don’t want to waste my money on second best.

Newt’s a blowhard….very full of himself…….Even the republicans ran him out of the House….the fact that they are turning to him shows a certain amount of panic….Bring him on. If he’s the candidate it’s gonna be really entertaining…..

Okay, so skepti (the klepto?) says that Newt skipping with $1.6 million plus of taxpayer money from Freddie Mac, under at best “dubious” circumstances, perfectly illustrating his “character”, was GOOD for the taxpayers?

Okay, I’ve looked at the beginnings of these: Never Call Retreat: Lee and Grant, the Final Victory; Pearl Harbor; Grant Comes East; and Days of Infamy. None of these is a serious history book. They are easy reading popularizations. Also I note that all of these were co-written with William R. Forstchen — who knows who did what? Maybe Gingrich wrote his name, and Forstchen wrote the rest. Popularizations have a place, even an important place, but they aren’t scholarship, and these particular examples aren’t even good examples of popularizations.I’ve known some really smart people — I think three of the smartest I’ve known were Carl Sagan, Robert Nozick, and Eve Sedgwick, all now sadly departed. Gingrich doesn’t come close.
