Cars are VASTLY more efficient than they were, and the only reason this is true for US cars is because of CAFE standards. That’s also why the Japanese wiped up Detroit when gas prices went up.Thank God for a few real leaders in the US auto industry, like Alan Mulally of Ford…
Yeah, look at the Mercury Space Program(sarcasm*) What a waste! Blowing up all over. Green technology is succeeding all over the planet in other countries who don’t whine about a few failed tries.
And government-supported green technology is doing quite well — having a few Solyndras was expected, since companies that need investment are those that might fail or succeed. Funding only companies that are guaranteed to succeed would defeat the whole purpose. The government actually has a better track record than the private sector in this area.
A number of cars in the 1960’s got better than 30 mpg. Several years ago, a Honda Civic in the fleet where I used to work was getting a consistent 53 mpg average, and the newer ones are getting LESS??? Porsche is working up an expensive limited production sports car that gets 63mpg, and does 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds. Performance IS getting available, and technology is improving things. CAFE standards are for FLEET averages, so there will still be room for some gas guzzlers. Now adding pickups and SUV’s to the standards IS a good idea. Considering my small pickup a number of years ago got around 28 mpg, and would haul just as much on “average” trips as what 99% of pickups sold ever haul, there’s room for improvement there as well.
True. The best thing GM could do is fire the top three or four levels of management and re-staff from scratch. They’ve been making the same damn mistakes for forty years or more. That’s not hyperbole — Fortune ran an article showing cover stories they had done in GM since 1970, making the same points over and over again. So what did they do when they were clearly in the crapper? Bring back a previous CEO who hadn’t changed a thing. Sheesh.
Sr: considering “energy companies” have blended all into one, same-O, same-O! Subsidy-O! (having nothing to do with Obama by the way, it’s been going on for over a century!)

Well, that technology is just as feasible as any of the other green technologies…

Saying does not make it so.
I can build a car that runs 1500miles per gallon if the gallon is Plutonium. As a bonus the Carbon footprint is zero-0.

Which is the point exactly…“green welfare” is wrong no matter what side authorizes it.

Which is my point…no subsidies should be given to either…glad we agree.
