I haven’t even thought of steampunk for a very long time! But what a great “movement”. Imagine: in a hundred years time kids may be dressing up in styles that our current eyes would see as a nineteenth century Victorian would regard steampunk. Hope so.

Greg actually has a good handle on drawing steampunk fashion. I love that style. He did say last year that he likes the style so I’m just guessing he’s kidding about using it as the punchline. Also, I’m sure a lot of people who read the strip would be surprised to find out that that’s an actual band Luann referenced.

I think the girls look terrific in their steampunk outfits. But the band should, of course, be Abney Park!

Very deep thoughts today. Lots of wordage that shows either you are well educated or own a dictionary/thesauruses. Im not Trolling on you guys, I just think its refreshing to see words above the two syllable range. LuAnn in my opinion went a little far on the White. Looks more like a high dressed mime.

In response to the first question, steampunk is both a genre of music and of science fiction. I would not be surprised if it is a separate genre in more fields as well.

I dislike when there is a costume event and some people make no effort! It really ruins the total effect. There are always things to be had in resale shops (I saw in the news that even the Goodwill stores have costume suggestions now).

My dh and I went to a Renn Faire a few weeks ago. He dressed steampunk and went as a time-traveler (I was in my usual peasant dress — my steampunk outfit isn’t ready yet). We got pictures of several others who were dressed in steampunk outfits. It was GREAT!Oh, and he’s 60 as well.

I don’t go to Renn Faires because I can’t take my bird, but I play in SCA. I even have lovely turned pointed shoes of leather with embroidery and pearls. They are heavenly comfortable!

I love Steampunk! Not so much the fashion, but for me it’s the architecture and mods to furniture and tech (such as laptops). Don’t know if references and links are allowed here, but CBS Sunday Morning was supposed to do a Steampunk story this morning (haven’t watched the DVR yet to see it). They don’t? News to me! I would imagine that you are no longer “young” enough to be included in the genre of todays music. Don’t feel alone. I am old also (lit. and fig.), do not like what is called music today, and find myself yearning for the good old days of “real” rock and roll. As another cartoon character says to his son (“Curtis” is not carried on gocomics. WHY!!!), and mine said to me (and your’s said to you…and yours…and yours…) “TURN THAT CRAP OFF!” Just remember, Bebop, Big Band, Frank Sinatra, etc., were “CRAP” to their parents. What goes ’round, comes ’round. Statement and question.

It may be a day early, but Happy Halloween. :D

Actually, I find steampunk quite intriguing too. First time I saw it, without realizing I saw it, was on StarTrek Next Generation – the two parter where Data’s head gets separated from his body, and to put him back together, they ultimately meet Mark Twain, and Guinan. The aliens who dressed in period costume qualify, I think, as steampunk.

I knew nothing about steampunk until I saw outfits and backgrounds offered on POGO.com in the mini mall where you can dress your mini-me in this genre. Now I have learned even more from the posts on this cartoon. It’s very interesting….I like it.I will find the bands mentioned and listen to the music. Thanks so much for information everyone!

I’d have liked to see Tiffany in steampunk. Would be nice to see her fit in with Luann’s crowd occasionally. Also would like to see the fellows’ costumes.

We saw Steam Powered Giraffe at San Diego Zoo this past summer. Those steam-powered robots made some really beautiful music! Thanks for giving them the mention, Greg. They deserve it.

Finally, Bernice chose the best outfit. At the pageant, she had a grandma gown. Everyday wear, she is plain. She probably should go steampunk full time as she seems to be more fashionable in this style.

Steampunk is much more than just music and literature. It is an entire culture. And fun, too. Take the word of a 60+ year old man….

I love Bernice’s outfit, but it can’t compare with anything Girl Genius has.It’s not a music or a literary genre, it’s a fashion.

What I’d like to know, is how as teenagers that they have money for these awesome outfits. Dressing right in Steampunk, and Goth (thinking of Crystal) can be quite pricey.How do the manage to pay for it??

I honestly don’t care if its a sockpuppet or not, but you can generally who’s here to really discuss the comic, and who’s here to take a dump on the board and on Greg Evans. I don’t give the latter a lot of leeway. Whether you do or not is up to you.

Could someone describe for me what the clothing style is for steampunk? This is the first time I’ve heard the word, but, going by the cartoon, I like it.

An early example of steampunk literature is “The Difference Engine” by Bruce Sterling and William Gibson, set in an alternative 1890’s London where Babbage perfected the mechanical computer and the Information Age came 100 years early. Think Dickens with debit cards.

Just listened to Abney Park for the first time today, and visited the wiki on steampunk. They mentioned the video to Panic at the Disco’s “The Ballad of Mona Lisa”, which is an AWESOME song!

Hmmm…third-grade playground namecalling? It must be clod! Er, clyde! No, seems all I hear are crickets.

Actually, I believe the Foglio’s giraffe was a nod to SPG, and not the other way around. Phil likes to work in nods to current events/pop culture in his strips. Steam Powered Giraffe have been busking since 2008 under that name, and the Girl Genius strip is considerably more recent, so obviously it was a sly nod to the band.

Well the band said, “We never saw that panel before!” Phil hasn’t replied yet but at the moment, given the date of the strip, I’m leaning toward “crazy coincidence.”

Abney Park is OK, but Steam Powered Giraffe is GREAT. They are a San Diego based group that is innovative, new and fun. Built for all ages, their shows bring in hundreds of new fans. I heard from Phil’s assistant today, as Phil and Kaja are traveling. She said she believed it to be entirely coincidental, although she said it was a “not-even-remarkable” coincidence considering how innately humorous giraffes are.
