A few years ago I read in the literature for Operation Rice Bowl (if I remember correctly) that half of the people in the world live on no more than 1/2 cup of rice a day. A staggering thought when I look in my pantry, and brings to mind an activity I may take up in my retirement—volunteering at local food banks.

@cosman, how long have you had the hiccups at this time? I have to follow my father’s guidance for revealing his secret.

Crazy to think that food insecurity is even worse now than in comparison to when this strip was printed.

Every day I hear, “Hey, let’s go to lunch. I’m starving!” And every day I shake my head and think, “No, you’re not….”

Hobbes is like the local stray I feed-nothing I give her is ever enough, she’s always crying for more…

Overpopulation is not the problem, nor is food production. Even the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization states that there is enough food. The real issue is distribution, War, poverty and natural disasters are the leading causes of hunger. (see www.overpopulationisamyth.org) I commend Pelican47 and others who step up to do something about hunger in the world. Since Harry Chapin’s passing, there’s been a lack of urgency for the starving people in this world. Let’s hope we can rekindle that torch, starting here, today.

All right! So glad to see this being offered here again! I loved this strip the first time around, and saved it from the newspaper frequently. Hope Bill Watterson is enjoying his royalties—he deserves every penny!

Hobbes, you’re a stuffed tiger. That has to be the opposite of starving. Then again, what animal doesn’t beg for food no matter how well fed it is?

This is why I do not like eating contests.

Can it mendojoe. This isn’t a place for left vs right. Especially now, with this strip in particular. It’s simply saying that our perception of a lack of food is sometimes a little skewed. Let’s not turn it into a political debate.
