If we use trains and metro stations more, we won’t need to buy mideast oil and we won’t need to send our military to protect oil sources. The Saudis in Al Qaeda would lose a major funding. Traffic would be better and so would our air.
According to police stats, in 2010 one homicide and three rapes took place in the entire Metro system — unfortunately it is not clear as to whether this was in the subway (pictured), bus, parking lots, or other facilities. Not exactly a high percentage. And if more people took it, the numbers would be lower.I take the T in Boston — I have half or even a third of the commute of my colleagues, if need be I can walk to the stop from my home. I can read or even work on the half-hour I commute. It’s quite reliable and considerably easier on the nerves than driving downtown!
I’ve used public transport in D.C., Portland, and where available, prefer it to private car in the “city”. My town is one mile from end to end, so either walk, bicycle, or use a 60mpg scooter for “package errands” (until snow and ice cover roads). It isn’t just the fossil fuels we “use”, but the fact roughly 80% are WASTED because of our inefficiency that profits the corporations that fought conservation for nearly a century.
The fact that it is “contracting” that delays most “upgrading” or maintenance, not “unions” or “government”, we can do better.
There’s no denying the message of the cartoon: Too many D.C. residents drive when they could take the subway, and the subway—like the roads—needs upkeep.We need better public transportation w/in more cities, high-speed rail to connect cities along each coasts and along the Mississippi, bicycle lanes in metropolitan areas, and rewards for those who choose to live close to work.
