No, Banda lost the latest elections in Zambia. The mob are other autocratic leaders who usually game their own elections. I was last in Zambia in 2006. I wonder how the Chinese will fare since Michael Sata is a staunch critic of their “investment” in Zambia. (while I was there, yet another mining accident had killed over a dozen Zambians in a Chinese operated mine). Mind you, how will Zambia fare if the Chinese leave. Hmm, but they need the mineral resources; perhaps they will tread (on the Zambians) with more care in future. Others in the region are watching closely

Yeah, this has been kicking about since at least 2007. As far as I know, Sata actually supported the previous Zambian president’s rejection of America’s plans to set up the Africom base in Zambia. In South Africa there has been extensive coverage of that fool,Julius Malema, infamously calling Botswana a “puppet of the imperialist United States” who he alleges is considering allowing a US base there. At any rate, rumour has it we’ll know by next year who will succumb to the US’s lure to set up a local base for Africom, beyond the existing lilypad agreements in a dozen or so African countries.
