That’s only imaginary water from an imaginary storm setting records for high flood levels and damage. Interesting seeing “news” reports now saying it wasn’t as severe as predicted, so I guess next time will also just be “crying wolf”??
The media that cried wolf… The media convinced everyone that Irene was a bad one, precisely because its path was the heavily developed and populated areas along the east coast. Just about every hour and every day, broadcast and print media were the ones who played up the doomsday scenario with audacious headlines and reports from the field. Then once its all over they have the nerve to print headlines like the one above, implying that we the people made too much out of a Category 1 storm. Truth is, storms of this nature are going to be worse in some parts and and not so bad in other parts. One reason it wasn’t so bad in New York is because by then it had already passed over a lot of land and was wearing down. It could have been worse, and in some places - such as North Carolina and Vermont - it WAS bad. But this incident goes to show how easily the public trusts the media and how the media relishes that role.
If your house got smashed in a hirricane, it’s coverd by your homeowner insurance policy, even if there is water damage from the storm. But if it’s damaged just by floods, you must have flood insurance or you don’t get any money. And hardly anybody has flood insurance. People in NJ and VT are screwd. 2011 is proving to be one of the worst years.
