Ted Rall for August 24, 2011
Transcript:
Salary, U.S. Senator: $174,000 Median Net Worth: $14,000,000 Man: I'm a U.S. Senator but, just like you, I worry about paying the bills at the end of the month. Like, my At&T bill is $82.13. I have to work 12 minutes to pay that! Or take it out of savings. Do you have any idea how many hours I have to clock to pay an average mortgage? I slave a whole day from 9 AM to 11:30 AM to make my nut! Like many others, I've even been reduced to the underground economy.

I’m so sorry, let’s re-elect for another 6 years.

Let’s not forget that most of the founding fathers were millionaires, too (in today’s money), and at least as wealthy as the average senator today.

I’d be happy with him just being reduced to BEING underground. Indefinitely.

What happened to Senator Reid’s good looks, then?

Seriously, most of these guys are rich long before running for Senate, either by being born to wealth or marrying into it. There are a few self-made millionaires as well. One argument is that rich people are less corruptible than the poor. But that certainly hasn’t proven true with this Congress.
