    Our “free market” doesn’t meet the basic tenets that economists argue must be present in an ideal market – perfect information and mitigation of negative externalities. Companies that pollute pass their costs on to others, and consumers generally are unaware of companies’ records on issues such as pollution. Companies that do harm also tend to be very good at covering their tracks and at denying a correlation if, say, they dump toxic waste and the cancer rate triples. Calvin’s fantasy is all too realistic.
