My cat managed to claw her way OUT of one of those cardboard carriers like an alien exploding from a chest ON THE WAY to the vet so I had a loose cat in the car!
We just leave the carrier open in the house and all the cats are used to it. They still cry in the car, though. Two weeks ago when we had to evacuate town due to wildfires I had to drive 100 miles in old pickup with poor front end, towing a trailer, with one arm in a sling. Wife had to drive car with 6 crying, whining cats. I had the easier time of it.

our cat is really lazy until she sees the carrier come out (she only goes in it to go to the vet.) Then she’s super kitty!
