From a comment on Jeff Danziger’s cartoon:

“In fact, Revere’s own account of the ride in a 1798 letter seems to back up Palin’s claim. Revere describes how after his capture by British officers, he warned them “there would be five hundred Americans there in a short time for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.”

“Boston University history professor Brendan McConville said, “Basically when Paul Revere was stopped by the British, he did say to them, ‘Look, there is a mobilization going on that you’ll be confronting,’ and the British are aware as they’re marching down the countryside, they hear church bells ringing — she was right about that — and warning shots being fired. That’s accurate.”

”Patrick Leehey of the Paul Revere House said Revere was probably bluffing his British captors, but reluctantly conceded that it could be construed as Revere warning the British.

…“Cornell law professor ,William Jacobson, who asserted last week that Palin was correct, linking to Revere quotes on his conservative blog Legalinsurrection.com, said Palin’s critics are the ones in need of a history lesson. “It seems to be a historical fact that this happened,” he said. *“A lot of the criticism is unfair and made by people who are themselves ignorant of history.”

The now daily “did too!” “did not!” stuff aside- is the whole bus tour helping the Rs in any way? The loyal base has always been loyal. There has been no question about that. I’m curious about the moderates, the independents, the undecided.

Love the biased twisting of the word "warn"—Revere, captured mid-act in what the British considered a capital offense (spying) tries to bluff his way out but saying, basically, “our irregulars are already mobilized.” This is an implied threat, maybe, but not a “warning” in the sense of “heads up—you may want to get ready.” And address the simply uninformed part of her word salad that “you won’t be taking our guns” — even the ultra-conservative history professor was smart enough to ignore that cockamamie claptrap.

Hmm, with Sarah’s ecstatic scream in the ‘toon, thinking about young ladies love for riding horses, and the “Weiner” thing, all politics quickly heads for the gutter, but that’s about Clinton?

The only people more ignorant than Palin are her supporters.

Sarah would only be smarter than someone who said “57 states” if that person went on a national news program and insisted there were 57 states.

Palin is a total idiot, I am a left winger, and I will be the first to say that she is wrong in her accounts, however, that being said, Revere was a traitor, and only looked out for himself. I can see the stupidity between the two are surmountable. Do not read the story of Paul Revere, read “The Fort” by Bernard Cornwell. yes it is a novel but considered accurate by historians. AS stupid as Palin is she may have only stumbled on PR ride. Then again, I am surprised that she did not claim that PR is not on her bus.Rogbo.

The Republican idea that any news coverage is good, because people are too stupid to understand what is going on in the country, is working great. Unfortunately it is not helping the country to try to change history to fit the whim of a half term governor of a low population state, whose main purpose is to attract attention at any cost.

^ You mean Bill Maher, I assume. Yes, he is one of my favorites, but I don’t subscribe to HBO, I have to just watch clips.

Please bear in mind that Longfellow’s poem does not claim to be history.
