The shuttle was bloated to accommodate Air Force requests, but served well, actually. NASA is not out of business, and there is much more going on than “manned missions”, with the shuttle. Sadly, the last 15 years of dragging our feet has left us with a gap in providing “space taxis” now we have to rely on Russia. Fret not, “private enterprise” is getting ready to enter the market. That of course will be cheaper, just like a Halliburton contract.

President Bush Cancelled the Shuttle Program because we were supposed to replace it with a safer Shuttle system that hasn’t materialized. Having the vehicle mounted on the side of the boosters has been a problem since its origins.
