OOOF! reminds me of any time I used to see my uncles Pure Bred Blood Hound, Ginger when I was Mike’s age … ah how I miss those days of not worrying that I had to wash my face/hands after petting an animal LOL
Not my cats. A dog will greet you this way but not usually a cat. I missed Macushla something awful but when I came home and sat beside her on the sofa she looked up at me and said, “Oh you’re back.” Then she went back to sleep.
That’s why the expression, “You own a dog, but a cat owns you.” When I would get my dog from the kennel after being away, he would act very sad and sorrowful like he’d done something wrong and this was his punishment. I felt terrible having to put him up.
My dog starts screaming before I even get the car door open. He acts like I have been gone for days when I have only gone to the grocery store for a few things. When it’s not hot and humid I take him with me but in the summer I have to leave him at home in the air-conditioning.
That is exactly why I have five dogs. Nowhere else can you find such unconditional love with so little asked in return. It is “agape” (probably the 2nd definition if you look it up). I also have two cats and I love them dearly. But I think their love for me is based more on my being the source of food and catnip!
We had a cat that would pointedly sit in front of me with his back turned when I came home after being away. If I moved to another room he would come with me and sit down about 3 feet away with his back to me. After a few hours of this, he would be all cuddles and “welcome home”. He just wanted me to know that my extended absence was not acceptable behavior.
All this is true about cats and dogs. We have two cats - used to be three. Our cats used to have a sitter that came in and when we came back from travel, it was “oh, you’re home.” Now that our son lives with us again, whenever we go away and then come home, our cats are “man are we glad to see you. That rat doesn’t clean the litter as often as you and doesn’t give us as much attention as you, and ….” LOL
Our cat Lillith sits on the carpet in front of the door when I’m leaving for work and won’t let me pass. She usually complains loudly when I walk past her to the door. She is also usually there at the door when I come home after work.
She also comes into the bathroom every morning after I get out of the shower, sits on the toilet seat and meows at me until I take my wet hand and rub her down. I guess she thinks that if I’m getting a bath, she needs one too!
Oh, and Lillith is all black except for a tiny white patch on her belly (neutering scar?). She also lives up to her namesake… She is a little demon cat! LOL

My very first pet, with no playpal, used to think she is my mother (she licked the side of my eye raw – I loved to be licked by a cat – but hers was very rough). When I return home from trip, she would hiss at me VERY LOUDLY and I am hearing impaired, but she is nice to my mother. Guess because my mother did the most work of feeding her, etc. This would go on for at least 2 or 3 days. Just in case this make a different, my first cat was a Siami (spelling???) cat.

My two cats greet us about the same way when we return from a trip! It is really nice to get a warm, loving “welcome back”!!

I make a small business of in-home cat care to keep this from happening–and it works pretty well so they aren’t standoffish.
