Did you hear her try to explain a totally inexplicable decision? Something about history or whatever. Hillarycare was rightly defeated; what has changed?

Well, ANandy… you are right it was defeated, if that’s what you mean by “defeated rightly”. If you mean “for the right reasons”… nah.

As for what has changed… Several things, really. Premiums, for one.

But harley, none of those doors exist in Congress. In the Democrats we have “center-right,” “center pretending to be left,” and “center occasionally tilting mildly left if it doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings but willing to compromise with hard-rightwingers.” You should check out some of the political debates in Europe if you want to see what real hard-left wingers are like.

No, nomad, you are. I’m liberal (not “a” liberal, which seems to have been stereotyped), but I support many policies that cover the spectrum in the US. But in the US I’m a leftie. Truth is we are so far right that I’m surprised we haven’t come back around to the left from the other side of the Earth.

@ Nomad: no, they are not. If you can, check some of the UK Parliament meetings of Blair’s time. You could see him savaged by left and right. The UK’s left is actually pretty timid as far as the parties in Europe go (Political Compass considers both it and the Conservatives to be right-wing parties), and even it is more to the left than most US Democrats.

And actual leftists? I had a French guy in my MA program, quite the fun dude all in all, but pretty solid leftist as far as they go. I consider myself center-left in my political beliefs (though I often compromise when I consider it necessary) and this guy was way too much for me.

That’s true, the GOP betrayed the American people long ago and continues to do so in favor of its corporate sponsors.

cdward is right. And it’s not even difficult to identify, but God forbid the press do its job and expose it. Oh, yes, because it’s monopolized by right wingers, who are part of large corporations run by people who fund the GOP! Air America can’t even get into most markets, nomad. The channels are owned.

now….looking at the cartoon….the GOP…is coming out of the “You’re Kidding…Right?” door…even to the right of the “Goofy Right” door… Talk about slant/bias ladies and gentlemen…. Just a word to all who believe that our country is run by smoke filled board rooms…aka….corporate monstrosities…please note that the driving force behind the United States is small business, comprising between 75% and 80% of our GNP…surely it would be unfair to lay the lable of money grubbing, heartless, ‘white mans club’ on them would it not? I think it is fair for people who do not buy into this package wholeheartedly have the right to articulate their misgivings… you see…ANandy has a valid point about HillaryCare…there was the attempt to…for lack of a better term…to ‘ramrod’ it through…from behind closed doors, excluding those within the insurance industry to offer input….

johndh, interesting point, but while the economy is driven by small business, the government is being manipulated by big business, which has more money to spend on lobbyists and politicians. Also, let us remember that the insurance industry had no interest in productive input, since it was a direct threat to their profits, and instead ran a series of meretricious advertisements using scare tactics – and have done so again, even after claiming they were supportive. The PwC report is now revealed for what it was: a deliberately slanted scare tactic. PwC has distanced itself from its own report, saying explicitly that they only examined some of the elements of the plan, and did not examine the pieces that would reduce cost. And that was done by request of their client.

^That is simply another illustration of how a small but vocal (and powerful) elite can dictate the future of the many.
