    So sad.

He’ll regret this when he’s a dad. He’ll have to buy a farm, cut down a cornfield and build his own lake. Then maybe he’ll get to go fishing with the ghost of his old dad and appreciate it.

He might get the fishing bug when he’s a little older. Then, again, maybe Calvin is just a city boy. He’d rather swim in the motel pool than freeze in the lake. Can’t say I blame him.

If Calvin was with his dad, this moment would probably stay with him over the years as a very special memory. Sometimes it’s best to just do things that don’t seem fun at the moment.

I have read the camping trip story a few times and I always feel sorry for the Dad. He just loves the outdoors and nature and desperately wishes his family would love it too. I just feel sad for him that he ends up doing these camp activities alone, but at the same time it is realistic for the strip. Calvin only likes to get dirty and try things on his own terms. Calvin is always seeking luxury and ease. He tries silly or magical ways to achieve that end. Funny how he often ends up uncomfortable and dirty.

It *is* hard to find things for parents and kids to do together that they can both enjoy. Sometimes it takes stepping out of each other’s comfort zone for the sake of the time together. I hate fishing and went with my son who loves it. I hate running and went with my cross country running son. They hate hiking and grumbled the entire time they went with me - but we did them together at least once in awhile.

I love fishing, and Dad is correct; it is absolutely the best time of the day! I am not a morning person, but I get up everyday at a little after 5am to get ready for school. I’d so rather get up to go fishing!

We used to go fishing, but it was Sunday afternoons, not early morning. I remember once we were fishing and it was a really cool day, early spring, so the water was still FREEZING and I fell in the water, and dropped my dad’s pole, which I was using at the time. I had to go back in and get it, but was so cold. When I got back out, I was in tears, and my dad said let’s go. My brother however still wanted to fish, so I said we should stay. My dad too his shirt off and put it over my clothes so that I would have some extra warmth. We always had such a good time fishing! :)

When I was a kid I’d take a trip, every summer down to Missasipp to visit my granny and her antebellum world. I’d run bare foooted all day long, climing trees, free as a song, one day I happened to catch myself a squirel. So I stuffed him down in an old shoe box and punched a couple holes in the top and when Sunday came I snuck him into church. Sitting way back in the very last pew showing him to my good buddy Hugh, when that squirel got lose and when totaly bezerk. What happened next is hard to tell some thought it Heaven others thought it h-ll,but the fact that something was among us was plain to see. As the choir sang “I surrender all” the squirel ran up Harve Newmans coveralls and Harve leaped to his feet and said “Somethings got hold on me !!”

LeslieAnne, “And he said unto them, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19 You did well to accommodate your brother. Your Dad spared the ‘rod’, but he didn’t spoil the child. Apparently the cold water was not to your ‘laking’, but the fishing didn’t bore you to tears …and at least Dad let you have the shirt off his back.

As a local, semi-pro comedian always used to say, ”You can lead a horse to water, but if you can get him to lie on his back and float, then you got something.” Go fishing with Dad in a canoe once, Calvin. That’s all either of you will ever need.

Dad may love camping, fishing, and all that back-to-nature stuff but unfortunately for him, his wife and son don’t and nothing good can be gained from forcing them against their will to do something they hate year after year. Camping is the kind of thing that you either like/love or absolutely hate … and I don’t think forcing someone to go camping when they positively hate it will ever make them like it no matter how many times you make them do it.

From now on, they need to find something to do together as a family that they can all agree on and if camping really means this much to dad, I’m sure mom won’t mind if he goes on an occasional outing by himself … after all, isn’t he pretty much doing that now anyhow???

flyingdandelion and cdward speak my mind and my heart. I showed my wife the joys of hiking up a wilderness peak and she showed me her blisters; that is the end of that. I guess we’re both glad that we have a solid basis to know we’ll never hike up wilderness peaks together.

I’ve done a whole lotta stuff since then I never thought I’d do until the reality of being the only male in a household finally sank in. Some of them surprised me with joy, and I felt blessed. 20 years now, and we have a daughter (one of two) who enjoys hiking wilderness peaks, and I feel blessed. Other times I enjoy things alone, and I feel blessed.
