Even though this is Calvin, I wonder if the parents might think it’s highly unlikely that a 6-year-old kid could do this by himself (sorry Hobbes, they won’t count you).
Be funny if they blamed themselves for leaving the car in neutral or something like that.
That’s our Calvin. No sooner does he realize the trouble he is in - and that he is at fault - then he immediately goes into survival mode. Prevarications, feigned innocence… and distance. Calvin is very dependable that way.
Mom!
I watched the car start to roll
I ran after it
I tried to save your car, Mom
I was so scared
I thought I was going to die
BooHooHooHoo
But I knew you’d save me
BooHooHooHoo
I LOVE YOU MOM!
BooHooBooHoo
(winks at Hobbes)
You’re the best mother in the world.
Oh, I saved you the hood ornament.
Too much reality here, folks. It isn’t likely that Calvin could have moved the car, especially without opening the garage door. If there’s an opener, Mom would probably have heard it; if not, the door would still make noise. If the door was open … too much reality. It’s the fun of the situation that matters, and that’s what the cartoon’s about. That’s what just about ANY story’s about. We believe a lot of incredible things in order to make just about any movie or story work, and we enjoy it even so. I feel a lot of empathy for oil’ Calvin.
MIKE FIRESMITH’S COMMENT WAS FUNNY !! “GO TO SWITZERLAND THEY WON’T EXTRADITE YOU” IN REFERACE TO THAT CRAZY GUY THAT DID THAT CRAZY THING THEN WENT THERE. JUST A DAY OR SO AGO SWITZERLAND SAID THEY WOULDN’T EXTRADITE HIM HERE TO THE US……..HIS NAME ESCAPS MY MIND BUT WHAT HE DID IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND I WON’T MENTION IT HERE. STILL A FUNNY COMMET FOR THIS STRIP
Why does Hobbes have to look at his watch to realize that he can be ready in five minutes? :o) It’s sort of like checking his itinerary or schedule to see whether he can fit fleeing into his day’s activities.
Note to drivers, parents or not… please secure your car - what a kid can do to a parking brake or whatever you think is keeping your car from moving can amaze you…
(rather surprising that I survived my childhood… :) )
Grettings everyone! I picked up this classic strip because Brenda Starr finished its storyline just as I joined it following the demise of Annie last month. Also I got sick of that poster (should I say “poser”) calling us “sock puppets”!
Five minutes. Just enough time to go back in the house and get your Tiger Paw Credit Card and the nice chunk of swordfish Calvin’s mom has in the refrigerator for dinner. Gives “eating out” a whole new meaning. Hafta walk, ‘tho - the car’s out of commission for a while.
I have always wondered whether Hobbes was real. Really, I hoped at some point in the story something would actually be held against Hobbes. It never happens. Maybe it is Calvin’s imagination. Maybe Calvin always ate the tuna fish. Maybe Hobbes didn’t help him push the car out. Maybe he went and got Santa Claus.
Imagine a 6-year old struggling to push the car out.
Josh, the Brenda Starr storyline is still going on. I was under the impression that the “sock-puppets” called themselves that. They are mostly still there, too.
There’s a neat comic in an arc where Hobbes gets lost. Mom is searching the woods, calling out Hobbes’ name and hoping he’ll answer. That’s probably as close as we get!
Hey deepfried (may I call you that?) sounded like an honest questiion to me, no fault! I just gave my best reply. (free information and worth every penny!!)

They’ll be so grateful that he wasn’t hurt by the “accident” that they won’t even notice…

I’m almost afraid to watch Calvin try that. With his luck he’d find a way to make the situation worse thereby.

Do you think Calvin turned into the barefoot bandit? Look at 19 year old who stole a lot and finally got caught thanks to the boaters.

Hmmm! Teach the kid to lie! Fess up, Calvin! Hobbes will still be ur friend, no matter what, thru thick and thin!
Mom, should not hv left the parking brake off, but it was in the garage, wasn’t it?
Boy! Am I really getting into THIS story! Not real! :o)
