I think this is one of the first strips of Calvin and Hobbes I read. I fell in love with it after that. Bill Watterson has truly created a masterpiece. Only Peanuts comes close.

I also want to be the King and tyrant.

I think being the tyrant would be the best part…Hobbes would get to rant and roar…and chase away the slimy girls…

Hobbes is so smart. The perfect ploy. Still…. being President doesn’t sound like much fun. I think Calvin got the best end of this deal. “King and Tyrant”…. that covers all kinds of territory.

@moronbis: I would edge Peanuts out over Calvin and Hobbes. Barely. Schultz dealt with more issues more ethically and profoundly. But this toon is a proprietary article and all I’m saying is that I have a slight preference for apples over oranges.

I thought this was the G.R.O.S.S. arc! The last time such an arc appeared here, I thought of a counter-club that Suzie could start, complete with acronym, I’ll modify what I remember of it:

G.R.U.B. - Get Real, Useless Boys!

@Johanan Rakkav I am not justified in comparing oranges and apples. My apologies to you and all other Peanuts’ fans.

It is only *my* opinion. :)

C&H, your crowns look alike, so it seems logical to assume that you both will have ‘virtual’ equal billing no matter what your titles are. “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.” - from Shakespeare’s Henry IV

I think if Hobbes got to be King and Tyrant, his first order of business would be to change the name of the club. He’d probably allow Suzie Derkins in.

I’d have to give Peanuts the edge, too. After it’s long run, growing & evolving, Schultz, too, didn’t have anyone waiting in the wings to take over the strip. I think that is to both their credit.

Peanuts was great in its heyday. Later it started to become lost in its own PR. It was best when Schultz was writing/drawing for himself. (As is many memorable series. The guys who made Warner Bros. cartoons always said their creations weren’t for kids - they were created for THEMSELVES!) I loved it when it was surreal and bizarre. That means ANYTHING involving Snoopy and his many alter-egos. C&H is consistently surreal and bizarre - as any comic should be. (see also Bloom County or Non Sequitur)

WoodEye .. I have Thyroid Eye Disease and hurt everytime I see your avatar. To help correct the situation the doctor cut two strips from the roof of my mouth and transplanted those into the lower lid of each eye. This holds the lower lid in place and allows the the eye to (almost) close. As a dry corea is serious pain, you may want to consider surgery to correct your problem.

Calvin, you change your mind to be a President, King, and / or Tyrant. You cannot have three of them to be for your club.

I’m a comic junkie, but there must be something wrong with my sense of humor. Two highly rated comic, Peanuts and Garfield, never appealed to me. From the above postings, it is obvious that Peanuts was over my head. Garfield looks on many days that the cartoonist uses a rubber stamp on three panels, with an additional stroke somewhere to make it look original. The fairly new “Mutts” has never even made me smile, much less, laugh.

Hobbes has always been and always will be a lover of women, he has the heart of a poet. It will have to fall to the King and Tyrant Calvin to keep out the slimy girls.

(Don’t cha’ just love how we project on to these characters what we need them to be for us. I love Bill Watterson and of course, I love Hobbes, too!)

Calvin in training to be a future lawyer/politician. Hobbes will, as usual, be his aide-de-camp. What sort of hats Calvin will “wear” as an adult should be interesting….

Peanuts started slipping when Snoopy started having thought balloons and really jumped the shark with the whole Red Baron routine. They might as well have changed the name to Snoopy. Yes, I enjoyed Joe Cool and all, but the philosophy and insight that made the early strips so great went away.

    I like Calvin and Hobbes.

Why is it that zero out of however-many Peanuts fans here still can’t spell “Schulz” after all these years, even though it’s always been written right in the frame of every single day’s strip?

Not that there’s anything totally disqualifying about that. A lot of Calvin fans probably can’t spell “Watterson.” Jes’ askin’, that’s all.

@ Avon: Why didn’t I or most of us spell “Schulz” correctly above? That’s a very good question, and this site may explain it…

Frequency of Schulz is: 0.007 percent (about 1 in 14285)

Frequency of Schultz is: 0.035 percent (about 1 in 2857)

You can get those odds and others by putting in the first name as well. Other sites make their own comparisons.

Well, Johanan, I’m intrigued. But not convinced. To be silly: I know “Smith” is a more common name than “Obama,” but people still pick the right one to refer to the Prez. To be real: We respect people if we pronounce, spell and use their names right. Folks ridiculed the previous prez for calling nuclear things “nucular,” and they were right that serious stuff deserves to be called by its right name.

I’d excuse “Shultz” a lot more lightly in those who are not fans of Schulz.

Same with FAO Schwarz, the toy store here in NYC that rhymes with “wars” … if people are going to spend that kind of money and flaunt their shopping bags on the airplane home, they ought to say it right! If they aren’t, I couldn’t care less what they say.
