Well, we know Hobbes is alive but Mom doesn’t. But at Calvin’s age if I were his mom I’d figure his carrying around a stuffed tiger was normal and I wouldn’t have a problem with it. It’s a lot less of a problem than some of his other antics lol!
Cleokaya: How many guys do you know that change clothes more than once in a single day? Max arrived at the airport, unpacked, had dinner with the family and helped with the dishes. It’s still the same day!
Teaguemj: Yes, that shirt was very acceptable in the 80’s. My husband had a shirt that was similar, and so did every other man I knew at the time. Of course now none of them would be caught dead in it. My, my, how times do change.
Maxs’ mustache was fashionable then also. Twenty years from now teenagers will think the goatee and mustache men wear today looks funny? Some people think the Van bleeep (to give it the proper name) look is silly right now.
As more and more of our interactions are done through e-mail, chat rooms, face book, etc,I fear that Max’s comment will come to be the norm for an ever increasing number of people. Sad!
yyyguy, from your photo it looks like you wear a full beard. I have to agree with you that the current trend of the combined mustache and goatee looks a bit silly. That is why for the past 20 years or so, as facial hair trends have come and gone I have stayed with a nice full beard. Besides, my wife likes it. This is just my opinion and I hope this does not hijack this board.

its funny because hobbes is a stuffed animal around other peole but when he fights calvin hes gets all ruffed up then somebody asks what happend. so obviously hobbes is real
shermscott says: I thought I had a real friend once, but I imagined it.
LOL good one!
Im so envy Calvin, wish I could have a Hobbes! lol from now on! I will try to imagine one!
tabbylynn: Where have you been? Was your computer not working again?
yes, it has been being crazy and i have been bomed with homework have not made it to bed before 11 in God knows how long. sadly my computer is still not working right so as of now i can not see the comic and it is depressing. i hope by tomorrow i will beable to see them. i miss this alot. thanks for asking.
I’ve always thought that the way Max is leaning on that counter in the last panel seems a bit effeminate and creepy.
I agree with Gerrytrout that Max serves just ask questions. I also remember from one of the C+H collections that Watterson said that he didn’t like Max because he didn’t add anything to the strip, which is why he didn’t show up that much.

That’s a bit sad, Max.
Elwoodman about 15 years ago
I like the way that Mum is more than happy to support Calvin no matter what he’s like.
“He will when he’s ready”. Total acceptance.
I love this strip.

Joke is on you mom and Max! Hobbs is REAL!
teaguemj about 15 years ago
Well, Max is imaginary. So are: Calvin, Hobbes, Mom and Dad, etc.
And by the way: In 1985 Maxs’ shirt was very acceptable. Just check out any photos from then. No Homosexual ity implied here, I am sure.
BirishB about 15 years ago
Judging by Max’s imagination in this series alone, I would say that perhaps all his friens are imaginary.
And, ohbytheway, Calvin is playing with a real friend: Hobbes. Sheesh Max, don’t you know anything?
Hellbo about 15 years ago
LOL, i like that Uncle Max!!! Still Hobbes aint no stuffed tiger….

My only comment is, why did Max bring a suitcase if he never plans to change clothes?

Max’s shirt looks like the Nachos print by Taco Bell. His “taste” in clothes is funny. LMAO.
BTW, I don’t remember Calvin’s Dad ever helping Calvin’s Mom with the dishes.

There you go! We all always have alot of an imaginary friends in our lives. What’s wrong with that? Sheeshhh! LOLs!

I think Max looks like one of the Mario Brothers.
lazygrazer about 15 years ago
Don’t worry about Calvin, uncle Max. Go buy yourself a teddy bear and learn from him and his stuffed tiger.
gerrytrout about 15 years ago
Why indeed did Max bring a suitcase? For Calvin to look through I suppose. But really the question I have: Are Hobbe’s friends real or imaginary?
I’m thinking Max is just short lived foil for the whole nameless family, someone to pose the questions that Miss Wormwood can’t or won’t.
gerrytrout about 15 years ago
Hobbes’ friends, my grammar and spelling are going down the toilet.
