I adore Danziger but I don’t get the cartoon. Also, I’m filled with curiosity…what does “jump the shark” mean?I’ve heard it said a lot lately. Is it the new “going forward” or “absolutely” ?
The term originates from “Happy Days” when toward the end of its run, they all go to Hawaii, and Fonzie goes surfing (complete with leather jacket). The absurdity comes to play when Fonzie literally jumps over a shark. Hard to recover from that.
Though I think 555 might want to be careful with using the phrase. Can you say Sarah Palin?
The Happy Days episode was a deliberate jump by Fonzie – it was a stunt, ski-jumping over sharks. But it was such an absurd moment that Jon Hein picked it as the example when the show had quit making sense and was desperately seeking something to keep it going. Other examples are the introduction of new moppets (e.g., “cousins”) in family shows where the original kids get too old; moving the show to a new location; lots of special celebrity guests (e.g., Nancy Reagan on Diff’rent Strokes to “just say no”), etc.
Many thanks to all of you for the answers to my questions. It is very satisfying to not have to ask for or listen to an explanation from the powers that be for anything.
Who the heck needs newspapers or the trivializing toxic tele to get to the truth anymore? NOBODY.

This reminds me of Oliphant’s work a little, not the artwork so much as the theme.

FYI I started a collection of toons on healthcare reform in January. It’s up to 360 and I’m sure I missed some.
It’s available under collections for those of you interested in looking at a type of “historical” record. Just FYI.
