A couple of weeks ago Tsvangirai was actually saluted at their Defence Forces Day ceremony by military chiefs, Perence Shiri (ZAF) & Philip Sibanda (ZNA) who had previously vowed never to salute him. Not sure who Gado would label as the 3rd in this cartoon…retired Mujuru?
Nonetheless, a hollow gesture.
Chiwenga (Chief ZNA), Chihuri(police) & Zimondi(prisons) all still avoid Tsvangirai.
This week more MDC MPs were arrested, charged & released while others have recently been convicted of trumped up crimes. Continual harassment of the MDC continues by the police & army which remain firmly in Mugabe’s control.
Actually the “securocrats” from the Joint Operations Command (JOC) gained real control in Zimbabwe after the 2008 presidential elections (and largely called the shots since 2001). Mugabe was pressured by the JOC to remain in power. They had a lot to lose. So I’m curious how powerful they remain seeing as some have apparently met up with Tsvangirai last month for national security consultations.
Still, doubt this unity government setup will work. Zanu-PF still wants to cling to governorships in all provinces, unilaterally appointed cronies (& idiot) Gideon Gono as Central Bank governor and Johannes Tomana as attorney-general. Still loading the deck of cards.
We’ll see what happens in Harare on August 27th when South Africa’s Zuma pops round for a cup of tea. Er, nothing of course.
rekam: Tell your friend my fondest and earliest memory is as a 4 year old looking on the Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe’s side. Although I’ve been to Zimbabwe dozens of times, I only managed to relive it 33 years later in 2006 on my honeymoon. I walked across from the Zambian/Zimbabwean border with my wife and gazed upon it again. I plan to visit it again with my daughter. ;-)

rekam: If ever you manage to, go soon after the rainy season to see its full effect. There were very few tourists when we walked across but we did bump into a couple from Minnesota who took our picture with the Falls as a backdrop. We repaid the favour. ;-)
