dahawk said (yesterday) ”..if God preordained it all, then there is no such thing as man’s free will to choose…”, God’s sovereignty in preordination does not nullify man’s free will and responsibility. “Him (Jesus), being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. Acts 2:23 Although God foreordained the crucifixion (and resurrection), the humans involved did it freely and willingly. There are other examples, but the above verse is a prime example of the validity of both. God’s foreknowledge involves his love (as does every other attribute and character trait of his deity). I suspect that you tend toward Arminianism while I tend toward Calvinism, perhaps what is called Amyraldianism. Suffice it to say that I find no conflict between God’s sovereignty and man’s free will.

This was Bill Watterson’s 9th Sunday strip, published in January, 1986. Yesterday’s strip was from May, 1991. Calvin and Hobbes look different today because they are five years younger.

Well, at least Hobbes tried… if you can’t beat it, join it! LOL!

…and yes, you can plainly tell this is one of the older strips. Still good just the same. Love C & H!!!!

I use TV as an escape from whatever ills have beset me. I get so engrossed in a movie or what few “good” shows are still on that it takes my mind off my worries just like narcotic pain pills. Right now, it helps remove me from my 2 broken ribs and my collar bone that’s broken in 2 places!

Aside from the art, you can tell it’s an early strip by the writing. Hobbes is way too much of a scold here. Sounds more like Calvin’s father, and even has Dad’s expression in the first panel of the last row.

Being old and decrepit I’d miss having a t.v. if I didn’t, but not for the shows. I want to see the news, what little is actually presented, and some political discussion shows; I’ll watch old movies on occasion, if I can stay awake, but there are so many LOUD ads, and so much time is taken up previewing the upcoming news, that even those programs are wasting my time, any more. I turn the volume off on the ads, usually, since most programs run ads simultaneously, and if there is too little content, then the t.v. goes off. It used to be a opiate of sorts for me, but they’ve ruined that.

However, the little 3-year-old my wife watches becomes completely enraptured by the thing … it’s terrible, but then it’s easier to put him in front of it than it is to keep him otherwise occupied.

What a discouraging state of affairs, and this strip fits right in!

Yes! Go Bill! This strip makes a strong statement - especially the drop panels which are EXCELLENT. He might have had some backlash from this one (media outlets, etc) and toned things down later on, but these are the kind of strips I’d love to see more of.

    puddleglum:

Yesterday you stated: “I don’t ‘give God the blame’ for anything, but I think He is responsible for everything.”

There was a landslide in the Philippines recently, dozens of men, women and children died when their homes were buried under tons of mud. ‘God is responsible’

There was a tornado in Alabama that killed dozens, and destroyed everything they worked for all their lives. ‘God is responsible’.

Sorry, I will not blame God for man’s ignorance and abuse of the planet, but you feel God preordained it.

“When under trial, let no one say “‘I am being tried by God.’ For with evil things God can not be tried, NOR DOES HE HIMSELF TRY ANYONE.” James 1:13

God is good, “God is Love”.. He is not “responsible” for man making bad decisions and therefor suffering the consequences. Man is ‘responsible’ for those choices and their outcome.

rogue53, No matter what happens, God is testing and the devil is tempting. God’s objective is to build man’s character for eternity. We are here to obtain everlasting life through Jesus Christ and his death on the cross paying the penalty for our sins. Then we should live the rest of our lives seeking to become like Jesus. The devil’s objective is to destroy man’s character, and make us like him. Listen to some of these people that suffer tragedy, disease, illness, accidents and various other kinds of adversities. It can draw them to God and make them better, or it can separate them from God and make them bitter. In heaven there will be no more tears, pain, suffering and death. There will be eternal bliss and joy in the presence of the Almighty God. Obviously, you and I have some differences in our theology. I prefer mine. You prefer yours. So let it be!

Puddlegum, sounds like you agree with me in that “foreknowledge” is not “preordained”. God gave us free will to decide and in my opinion knows what we will decide, but he has not predestined the decision.

When Marx wrote that, opium wasn’t considered one of society’s ills, it were just something that made pain bearable for those who could afford it. Marx wasn’t decrying religion, he was saying that religion is what makes pain bearable for most people.

You come to a fork in the road. Will you go right or left? God knows the outcome of each path and every twist and turn along the way. The choice is up to you. That’s free will. He will be there to support you, wherever those choices lead you. That’s his promise.

Apostle4God, I believe the devil can do absolutely nothing unless God lets him. “The god of this world”, the devil is limited to what God will allow. That’s how God is responsible, but he’s not blameable because he works it all into his ultimate plan and purpose which is good. As Joseph told his brothers, “Now therefore, be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here: for God did send me before you to preserve life. Genesis 45:5 “But as for you, you thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. Genesis 50:20

If you can find the full quote (hard), it has to do with the poor unable to get adequate medical care and have faith to substitute for anesthetics because the ruling “elite” will not permit them any other to ease their suffering. Remember, it comes from the mid-19th century. While this is a part of a fairly justified attack on institutional religion, that part in context is rather favorable to real faith.

Of course reality shows are predominating. Once they have a fellow addicted, the dealers can provide a poorer quality product–doesn’t matter, because he’s hooked.

I’m so glad I’m not addicted to anything to do with a TV screen, like comics on the inter-…nevermind.

Some thoughts here: first - TV IS BUBBLEGUM FOR THE MIND. Second, when Jesus had been resurrected, and was surrounded by people who knew Him, and knew who He was, the Scripture notes the following: “….and some doubted…” Free will? Determinism? You choose….

Look for the latest book by Vincent Bugliosi (the LA prosecutor who put away Charles Manson), The Divinity of Doubt - he makes some solid sense about all this dichotomy between free will and predestination, and ties up the evidence for the jury. Just heard a great interview he did on Uprising about, among other things, the difficulty getting it published.
