As someone who has lost major weight and kept it off, I can tell you the hardest part is doing it instead of just intending to do it someday. Eating fewer calories than you expend is easy in comparison, it’s just math. Deciding to rearrange your life so you have time to work out and shop for decent food, finding new stuff to do with your fat friends that only want to eat out and aren’t in good enough shape to do anything else, that’s tricky. The main obstacle to losing weight is not wanting to give up the habits that made you gain weight in the first place.
Whenever and wherever it happens, change of perspective, whether of food or philosophy, often brings revelations of what is ahead and how to deal with it. What it doesn’t bring is motivation. That needs ‘kindling’ and a match called resolve.

Success has a way of changing your philosophy.

Burke’s perspective may be partly (ahem) conditioned on his weight loss.

Dr Spaetzle is wishing instead of doing. Mr Burke is an example of doing.

Maintenance in both respects is the tough stuff.

I do like Mr. Burke’s shirt. The black and red go well together in that pattern. If I ever see one at the store, I’ll buy it.
