In a little bit of fairness, those companies started the Keep America Beautiful campaign to stop people from littering.

But that seems to be the only bit of altruism they were interested in.

The best kind of litter is none, but I’ll take plastic bottles over broken glass bottles and sharp sheet metal cans any day, whether I’m stepping on it or cleaning it up. So thank you, Nathaniel Wyeth.

Over 50 years ago I was at the Le Mans race track in France. The track runs through some woods and spectators were allowed to wander through them too. As I was doing that I spotted something in the grass — a discarded Budweiser beer 12-pack carton with a very obvious “Keep American Beautiful” campaign slogan on it. Well, I guess that’s one way of doing it.

    There was a day …

High school kids passed a convenience store a block from “my” park in the afternoon to by snacks & drink. Younger kids collected the bottles and used the refund to buy candy. System made for clean park.

Today, no refunds; no pickup; trash builds until the police bring in a group of curfew violators to work a Saturday morning. Miss the old system.

Ol’ Jef kills many birds with one stone today, wasting time on-line, plastic litter, casting white men in native american roles…

Does this mean that Finn Mertens is actually a distant descendant of Robert K. Merton?

In Germany, one takes bottles back to grocery stores to get some money back. The US used to have that system.

My dad worked for Continental Can, developed the pull-top ham can. They also came up with twist-off caps for pickle jars; before that, you had to pry them open.

I get so angry when the media shows a conclave of pollution activists. Each with plastic water bottles in front of them and knowledge that they flew to the meetings. As with our Climate Tsar, John Kerry, who uses private jets or flies 1st class.

Looked up the ad. Mallett nailed it again. See Cody’s screen record https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002014/

It shows the long and colorful history of a man who adopted a whole other nationality and worked hard to elevate it in the eyes of the public.

On another note. Mallet’s comment about containers is right on.

Only humans mess up their home environments with trash, some carelessly, some who live where municipal collections are sporadic or even non-existent, and some who deliberately dump without regard for environmental damage.

We have passed the point where we can correct the trend. Momentum is against us, and there appear to be no drastic measures that will help; only a few that will slow the deterioration. C’est tragique.

when I go to the beach and much of the trash is some container or wrapper for snacks and junk food, I think “we barely take care of ourselves, let alone anything else”. And those of you who always toss the blue beer cans into the woods, stop it!

Is anyone surprised that patriotic multinational corporations LIE about something, in order to benefit themselves?

This strip has certainly elicited some challenging responses! Not too much about “re-using”, though.

I was a child at the time when that commercial was airing, and my best friend and I took trash bags and went out to pick up trash. Only problem: no trash! The “City Beautiful” initiative apparently worked pretty well in our city in the 70s. We scraped up a handful of cigarette butts and bottle caps and that was that.

Back in the sixties, many places gave out plastic “litter bags” to hang on your dash in the car. Of course, in those days cars had knobs to hang them on.

This page more than a “like” option. Like a “mad” one for this comic.
