See, this is interesting! It’s so rare to get a funny-animal comic where they actually acknowledge that the animal being treated as a pet is, for all intents and purposes, just another human being.
All those rules are justified in Paul and Jill’s case; dogs will get their fur all over their furniture if they lay on it (especially if it’s a long-haired dog), and dogs will get hurt if they run around outside on the sidewalk without a leash.
My dog has run of my home. She chooses to sleep on her own blanket on the furniture or on a dog bed, I have always wanted my pets on my bed so I know what they are doing at night, I don’t take my pets in the car unless they are going with me when I get out, I have a built-in trash compactor, but my dog cannot beg at the table. She has to wait until I am done, and then she can usually have what I didn’t eat. I also don’t beg from her food dish, so it’s fair. No wonder my pets have always been so happy. I do require a leash on her here to follow the laws of the city and the rules of the HOA, but I would anyway since she is a champion hunter, and once the nose engages, the ears disengage. She loves the multiple daily walks and comes running when I pick up her leash. No fencing allowed here. Poor Buckles, thinks like a human most of the time and yet has so many rules. But he loves his family as dogs are wont to do.
Rules are much the same for our kitten…except for the furniture…we have quilted covers for all the living room furniture so he gets to sleep wherever he wants in there, but not the bed because I’m allergic. He was feral, but has adjusted beautifully and all I have to do is say “no” once and he gets it.
