Ironically, Manatee County made thousands of books inaccessible to students just in time to celebrate “Literacy Week” in Florida, which ran from January 23 to 27. Only about 50% of students in Manatee County are reading at grade level.

The right-wing populists like to paint people with the terms, “communist and socialist.” There are effectively no communists or socialists around, other than Tell Rall, maybe. There’s only totalitarians in China, in Russia, in Hungary, and here.

What I don’t understand is why the large Cuban refugee population thriving in Florida, doesn’t recognize the authoritarianism being perpetrated by Ron DeSantis. If I can recall those refugees, some of whom were transplanted to Wisconsin, and the reason they were fleeing Cuba, why don’t they recall this as well? DeSantis is basically imitating Castro. North Dakota’s legislature wants to send librarians to jail if they don’t remove the books they’re told to remove. Librarians are educated on selection criteria, and are better judges of what is appropriate in libraries than those folks are.
