I think that this reveals a significant problem with the Senate itself, and not anything to do with term limits. Seats in the Senate are done by state wide election, and Senators have plenty of time to dig in and build strong walls protecting their positions. They create extensive support networks with deep roots throughout their states.
Look at Rand Paul, a totally worthless fop, and yet he manages to defeat Charles Booker, a strong, intelligent, dynamic candidate dedicated to the people, and not himself.
The idea of the Congress being divided between an upper and lower house may have made sense in 1787 but those days are passed.
We need to eliminate the Senate. We need to return the House to its former 1 Rep for every 30,000 constituent ratio. We ought to increase the term of a Congressman to four years.
This brings representation BACK to the people. Currently my Congressman serves around 700,000 people. I’ve met him twice and he has no idea who I am. If we increased the number of Congressmen to 1/30,000 I would have much better contact with him. He would serve me, my family, my neighbors and my community.
The population of the US is around 330 million. The 1/30,000 would give us about 11,100 Congressmen. With today’s technology we could easily support a body of decision makers that size. It would increase representation and it would greatly change party politics and return direct representation to our democracy.
