‘You’re going to see acts that defy humanity,’ police chief says, as officials urge calm when Tyre Nichols arrest videos are released publicly tonight (cnn.com)
This video must be horrific.
I remember the LA Riots. It was the first big video to be released of police brutality. It caught all the big news about it and LA was already a powder keg with racial tensions among the different groups. The previous year was the part that laid out the fuse was when Latasha Harlins was killed by a Korean shop owner, but the shop owner only got probation. Then you finally get this video that spreads all over the news of the police just openly beating a Black man who is begging to be peaceful and that was the match and led to 6 days of massive riots, over 60 deaths, and practically a war between African Americans and Koreans in LA.
Now days, it would be “another Tuesday” sort of. It wasn’t just Rodney King’s beating that the riots were about, it was decades of economic downturn in that area and growing distrust of the races with each other.
Just like with George Floyd protests, it wasn’t just for him, it was the years prior with all the others, and we have recent events that have been bubbling about too so again, it could just spread like wildfire like the last few times.
Said it before and I’ll say it again: the training for those who want to be police has to be significantly longer and more on par with what other countries do. Federally mandate it. Get the experts together, determine an appropriate length of time and winnow out the bad actors.
As long as cops see it as “us versus them” … and as long as they’re trained as soldiers, which intensifies that… we’ll have bad cops who aren’t retrained, retired or removed. As soon as all of us see that the cops are starting to be “all of us against REAL crime” (which may be forever as things seem to be going right now), the we’ll start to be able to work with the cops, worry less about being arrested for living while black, etc.
I don’t really see a way to get there from here, not with politics the way it is.
@dotbup- What really saddens and angers me is that these were BLACK cops! Something totally unexpected! And for many years, Black communities have always complained about White police officers brutalizing us. But now, it doesn’t appear so in this case. I had a conversation about this with another gentleman yesterday and he made a very interesting point. After that incident, those cops were quickly fired and brought up on charges. When that happens with White cops, the police unions waste no time in stepping in to defend them regardless of whether they’re right or wrong! So now, all those cops are going to see just how justice really can be! And another note. After the George Floyd murder, how could those cops even THINK of doing that to someone??? SMDH!! :(
As Lincoln (supposedly) said, “If you want to know a man’s character, give him power”. It’s very much too bad, indeed tragic, that the display of character by the Memphis police was so murderous.
