Now those crazy neighbors who thought they could be chicken farmers don’t seem quite so crazy. I buy eggs from my four-yearold greatgrandson. He has chickens for pets.
The reason for the high egg prices is that millions of chickens had to be destroyed because of bird flu. Supply has been hit hard and very low because of that. Prices should settle down and decrease after farmers regenerate their flocks. I say “should”, but it remains to be seen.
Bought a jar of mayo the other day, $8.29! $8.29?! What? Then it dawned on me there are a couple of egg yolks in it. I say jar as it is now 30 oz and not 32 oz.
‘Simple profiteering’: FTC urged to crack down on egg industry’s ‘organized theft’
As U.S. egg producers rake in record profits amid soaring prices, a farmer-led advocacy group focused on building a just and sustainable food system on Thursday implored the Federal Trade Commission to “promptly open an investigation into the egg industry, prosecute any violations of the antitrust laws it finds within, and ultimately, get the American people their money back.”Just before testifying at an open meeting of the FTC, Farm Action sent a letter to agency chair Lina Khan detailing its “concerns over apparent price gouging, price coordination, and other unfair or deceptive acts or practices by dominant producers of eggs such as Cal-Maine Foods, Rose Acre Farms, Versova Holdings, and Hillandale Farms, among others.”
As Farm Action explained, “Egg prices more than doubled for consumers last year—going from $1.79 in December 2021 to $4.25 in December 2022 for a dozen large Grade A eggs.”Major egg producers and their allies have blamed surging prices on a “supply disruption” triggered by the deadliest outbreak of avian influenza in U.S. history, calling it “‘act of God’ type stuff,” the letter notes.
If the chicken egg factories clean up their processes it should only be a matter of months to recover from their disease prone practices. Layers grow up fast, let’s hope the pure profit driven food industries do the same.
Humorous point, and apolitical. Eggs are so expensive (temporarily) because so many hens had to be euthanized due to the spread of a new strain of bird flu. It’s simple supply (low) and demand (high).
Fuel prices, transportation costs, feed prices and recent outbreaks of avian flu have all resulted in higher egg prices. Gary’s ‘toon is no more than a tongue in cheek reference to that. No conspiracy. We have a small flock of chickens (we refer to them as living lawn ornaments) and I have certainly noticed the increase in feed. The hen layer from our local Ranch and Home has increased from about $18 last year to a bit over $23 the last time I picked up a couple bags. We mix that in with bulk red wheat which has also increased by $20 per barrel.
The outbreak has killed approximately 60 million birds, which includes 41 million commercial egg-laying hens, Karyn Rispoli, editor of the Egg Price Current for Urner Barry, recently told Axios.
Last time I checked, Gary, a dozen non-organic eggs cost $2.49 at my local Trader Joe’s. Occasionally, I buy eggs at my local Safeway or Giant where they cost more than that. When my local farmer’s market is open (H St Market, which will open in mid April), I can get eggs for $5.00 or $6.00, which I don’t mind since it helps the local farmers. The Avian Flu that has been driving up the price of eggs has largely affected the large egg producing facilities, less so the smaller egg companies and the small farmers. Don’t like the “eggflation”, Gary, blame Big Ag!

Wait arent most chicken farms in rural America
And arent most rural states where these chicken farms preside from red republicans states?
So by inference republicans are causing egg prices to go up correct?

Eggs are expensive, but not that expensive. If paying an additional $3 for a dozen eggs breaks you, you were already broken.
