Who do they think she is? Six year old Shannon? What 19 year old has not learned to put the dirty dishes in the sink / dish washer? What does Greg think this is, “Family Circus”?

She got off easy. I hate it when people just leave their mess (even if it is only a bowl) sitting there and not taking care of it. It says “I’m too special to clean up after myself. Take care of it since I can’t be bothered.” It says the other person is less important than you.

For me it’s always been the opposite, even now it’s my father who gives the very, VERY long speeches in an irritated voice when he thinks I’ve done something wrong. So, pretty much every time we see each other.

Luann is 19 years old. They are done raising her and telling her what to do. If she can’t follow the rules she needs to move elsewhere.

I JUST typed this diatribe on Nest Heads… seems to fit here as well:I read a study years back about how single moms raise boys who are wimpier in general. On the play ground, the mom will yell “Be careful!” and “Don’t go up so high,” and if the kid gets hurt, they coddle them. Dad’s on the other hand, encourage boys to take risks, and tell them to suck it up when they get hurt. And now, all these years later, we have men with top knots, dressed in women’s clothes, looking for the ‘safe space’ in their university because someone triggered them with a harsh word! Just sayin’!

Has nothing to do with eating cereal! Mothers have the need to explain why you need to do things in nauseating detail, yet in many cases that is unnecessary. Fathers on the, other hand know (or at least assume) that the child knows better, and cuts through the BS! The child knows that they haven’t performed a task and are usually just being lazy.

Can’t say I really have an opinion. I guess I would vote for Frank’s style, but I’m still trying to get past the idea that a person this age doesn’t pick up their dishes. Even little kids learn to, at least, put their dishes in the sink. So to me, at her age, the fact that Luann still doesn’t automatically pick up her bowl just seems impossible.

Wow, Luann is WAY too old to be doing this! Considering that she is actually old enough to be living on her own, and maybe even married with a small child, I shudder to think what the rest of her living environment would look like (and we thought her bedroom was bad!).

Where I’ve seen this happen, it seems to be the result of the parents doing everything for the kids. My brother’s kids seemed to do it regularly, and usually leaving the bowl half full of milk. BUT, they were only in early elementary school at the time!

It’s completely the opposite in my household. My husband will give the loquacious lecture, while I’ll just remind my kid briefly. I find the brief reminder works better, because they already know the reasons why they’re supposed to do the thing; the lecture just gets their hackles up and starts a fight — half the time, it ends with them storming off to their room and leaving the trivial task undone, where as the brief reminder actually works.
