Kevin McCarthy can’t be allowed to serve as House speaker after voting against Biden certification: conservatives
Kevin McCarthy’s endorsement of Donald Trump’s election lies should disqualify him from serving as House speaker, according to a pair of prominent conservatives. The California Republican is facing a leadership challenge from his party’s right-wing flank, but The Bulwark editor-at-large William Kristol and University of Texas government professor Jeffrey Tulis argued that he should not be allowed to serve after he voted against certifying President Joe Biden’s election win.
This is why I say abolish the party primary system where the most likely outcome is the president ends up being the preferred choice of 25-30% of eligible voters. Just randomly split eligible candidates unto two primary groups voted on by a random split of registered voters and have the winners from each go to the general. Then we might actually get that preferred choice up to the 40% with a candidate actually trying to appeal to all voters.
Fast-forward to the eruption at Mar-a-Lago: Trump had endured a month of hell. He couldn’t hide from the shame and blame for the defeats of the most prominent candidates he endorsed only because they would recite his 2020 election-result denials.
Then, at 7:44 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, Mount Trump volcanically erupted. In a post on his Truth Social network, @realDonaldTrump called for the “termination” of the U.S. Constitution’s rules – so he can somehow regain the presidency.
Remember, as you read his posting, that Trump is still the leader of the Republican Party whose members love to brag that they are the Party of the Constitution. Indeed, many love to reach into their suit pockets, whip out their mini-Constitutions to impress audiences. Now read Trump’s post:
“So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC & the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential election results of 2020 OUT and declare the Rightful Winner, or do you have a new election. A massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great Founders did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!”
Later, he added: “UNPRECEDENTED FRAUD REQUIRES UNPRECEDENTED CURE!”
Trump’s words erupted out of America’s screens and oozed like political molten lava across America’s political landscape. At first we heard mainly stunned silence from the famous names of the no-longer Grand Old Party. But soon they began publicly disapproving of Trump’s call for a constitutional “termination.” Now many are publicly saying Republicans must move on to a new generation of leaders.
Of course, Trump reacted by saying he didn’t say what he clearly said. Also, claiming the “fake news” was lying about him. But each time he said that, it caused Trump’s old lava – “Constitution…termination” – to spew anew from our news screens.
Since the Trumpist are still contesting the elections, wouldn’t it be time to do what the USA and the UN do when elections are contested in another country, i.e. send a military coalition to take control of the country until order and democratic process are restored? I mean, we know it has never worked but that could still be fun.
All Republicans have to do is find a demagogue like Trump who the bigoted angry members of the party will follow blindly, and the rest of the party will fall in line out of fear of losing those voters. Some great candidates have already emerged.
Democrats have to find someone to lead with the courage of their convictions but not be such a far-left ideologue that he/she proposes ideas that are impractical/ridiculous and undermine credibility. I can’t think of anybody who is that and has the needed charisma and gravitas.
Accept that your person sucks. Actually accept that they are not really there to help you, and won’t make the world a better place for anyone except the rich. Sure they might make a few minor changes that impact you, but overall…
So, if you spend lots of time supporting and campaigning and worrying about your person stop. It is a waste of your time, your effort and your emotional energy.
If you really want change, take all that energy that you put towards presidential elections, and point it towards campaigning and working towards changes that will actually address how broken the system is. That’s a better use of your time than fretting about the “lesser of two evils”
Democracy DEPENDS on compromise. And the definition I like best for that word is “Everybody hurts equally”. We in the USA seem to be unwilling to hurt equally. Or at all. Or even cope with situations that are less than pleasant.
Ted just can’t tolerate the fact that there is not unanimous agreement with his socio/political/economic opinions and conclusions.
He’d probably be able to (barely) tolerate any dissent from his positions if the populations of a sufficient number of voters in the 50 states elected 60 Senators and a majority of Representatives who crafted and passed only legislation he approves of.
Well, MAYBE Ted could tolerate this amount of dissent. Nobody can be sure about such a prediction, though.

Wrong question Ted, the real question is “who could beat them in a primary?”
And the answer is, nobody that’s shown interest as yet.
