    I’ve always wondered why destitute people are depicted wearing a barrel in comics inasmuch as it makes no sense whatsoever logically. Upon researching it, it turns out no one really knows how this came about. The best guess is that it originated in the 1920s in the comic strip Moon Mullins who would occasionally gamble all his money away and end up wearing nothing but a barrel.
