My problem with swimming butterfly (aside from getting a breath) is getting my arms out of the water. That’s more like “over my shoulder blades” than over my head. They best butterflyer on my team could grab one of those little white gym towels held between his hands and rotate his hands down, under his feet, back up behind his back and over his head without letting go (or struggling). He did it to “loosen up before the race”. Intimidated the heck out of me…

I swam butterfly and backstroke competitively in my teens. Forty-five years later, I’m plagued by adhesive capsulitis (aka Frozen Shoulder), severely limiting range of motion. If you swam either of those strokes, advise your doctor. Stretching exercises can prevent or cure the condition.

Butterfly is one of those things that if you don’t learn it when you’re young you probably never will, hell I was on swim team from when I was 6 and I never got the hang of it.
