Why does American freedom of speech allow outright lies to be broadcast as truth? Why was Russia’s Pravda held up as an example of media lies for decades by America?

When exactly were Trump’s freedom of speech infringed upon ? The truth is just the opposite. Whenever the law calls upon him to speak Trump invokes the fifth.

Payne believes he has the freedom to stand on the street corner, disrobed, pleasuring himself among the passerby, insisting those and their children who are offended only need to look away. Not realizing freedom includes the responsibility to respect the social boundaries those around him have set for themselves.

Yet here you are posting a cartoon that makes your point pointless. If you read a bit of history, you might recognize what real speech suppression looks like.

Stupid Henry Payne seems to conflate “Free Speech” with “Hate Speech”.

And while the government states you have the right to free speech, that doesn’t insulate you from the consequences of that speech. If you claim you are going to kill the President of the United States, rest assured you will likely be receiving attention from law enforcement agencies.

If you claim you are going to overthrow the government because you lost an election, and people follow your call to arms, you will be investigated and if evidence warrants, will be prosecuted for Insurrection and Sedition.

If you yell “Fire” or “Shooter” in a crowded theater and people are injured because they stampeded to get out, you will be arrested and tried.

But Stupid Henry Payne doesn’t care about that. Stupid Henry Payne only seems to care about “Consequence-Free Speech” to vent his spleen about.

Payne is not just a liar, he’s a bad liar. Trump not only has the same freedom of speech I do, he enjoys the power of his wealth and station.

If I had gotten on twitter and said the things he did I’d have been banned MUCH sooner.

Trump says stupid, outrageous, ignorant things and the media broadcasts it for free and covers it in depth. His speech is not only free, itvis invasive, perfidious.

That Payne can make such bad lies and yet still be published (and paid to lie, I presume) proves that freedom of speech, even the speech of hatred, is still free in America.

Freedom of Speech, as outlined by the First Amendment, means that the government cannot arrest or hassle you for what you say or write as long as it falls within certain guidelines of not threatening someone’s life, government overthrow or advancing criminality. If someone does not like what you say they are free to not publish. What is it about the First Amendment that Payne does not understand? Never mind, Payne does not understand most everything.

Freedom of speech is relative to magas and silent Republicans, I guess. The latest 3 mass shootings (and all other mass shootings) are considered as terroristic murders by Democrats and free speech by magas and silent Republicans. Anonymous threatening voice mails to teachers, school board members, election officials, American citizens are considered terroristic by Democrats but free speech by magas and silent Republicans. Banning books and educational topics, bigotry toward the LGBTQ+ American citizens, misogyny are considered cruel and autocratic behavior but freedom of speech by magas and silent Republicans.

They are all free to say what ever they want, the fact that some of us do not wish to repeat their lies and misinformation is in no way an infringement on their first amendment rights.

“How do you have patience for people who claim they love America but clearly can’t stand Americans?”

“America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, ‘cause it’s gonna put up a fight. It’s gonna say "You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.” – American President 1995

Lies have consequences. A man shot up a pizza joint because he believed children were being abused in a non-existent basement. People stormed the Capitol. A man murdered his own toddlers because he thought Lizard People were intent on ruling the world and they had lizard DNA. A mob attacked the Capitol because they believed the election was stolen.

Freedom of speech is not absolute. Truth matters.

Lying and beating a non-existent dead horse are just Payne stupid. Henry, if people want to say stupid things, they can, but no one has to listen to them. If no one wants to pay to attend a speech by stupid, lying speakers, that’s not censorship. BTW, which part is banning books?

Power in society is located in a number or institutions—government is perhaps primary in our society, but other institutions have a lot of power as well, particularly corporations, but also, for instance, churches. There is a special importance to ensorship by law, located in the government, and its inverse, freedom of speech, protected by the government. As a number of posters have pointed out, the government doesn’t always protect freedom of speech. But it is also important to look at non-governmental censorship, which certainly exists. There are things which are more or less unsayable. More so, perhaps, fifty or seventy-five years ago, or at least more in ways that I notice. I’m of the opinion that organized religion is overall a bad thing, but certainly when I tried to say that in school, for instance, back in the 1960s, I was shut up very quickly. I think any religion which discourages birth control is to that extent immoral. Again, if I tried to say that, I was shut up. If I tried to say that most major religions started out as cults, and many are different from cults only in that they are large, I was shut up. If I tried to question the capitalism as the basis of our economic system, I was shut up. If I tried to point out the fundamental immorality of European expansion in the US, I was shut up. If I tried to discuss US imperialism in Central America, I was shut up. Things have changed somewhat, relaxed somewhat, but not entirely. I bet other people with different political and religious positions could come up with different lists of what’s unsayable.
