Luann definitely has an imagination, judging from all the times she’s obsessed on what ifs. A story is just a long sequence of what if’s with scenery added.
The scarves are back – did Les and Piro travel to the past and have a kid? Sure looks like it. Of course, we cannot see if he has a star on the other side of his head or not.
I love Luann’s expression in panel 2, she’s so focused! Or Luann told Tara about her difficulties or her friend noticed that she was in crisis and wants to help her, I’m happy that Tara is giving her some useful advice. Unfortunately the situation and the environment are too different from how Luann is used to writing, maybe after returning to her room she will write ten pages in half an hour without even realizing it. But Luann has to learn to write wherever she is.

Writing challenge time. Here is a line: “When I woke up this morning. . .”
Take this line, good people, and see what you can write with it. Meanwhile, here’s my version:
“‘When I woke up this morning, you were on my mi-i-i-i-nd. . .’ The words from We Five’s song reverberated in my head when I opened my eyes after 7 hours of sleep. But why was I thinking that song? What did I dream about? Not that I can remember, but I have a vague idea of what popped up in my head while my eyes were resting. It was a person. With dark hair. I think it might have been a guy I had a crush on when I was in the eighth grade. No, no, no. It couldn’t have been. The guy was also wearing glasses. Whoa! Maybe it was that guy I stared at on the school bus one day when I was in high school. Can’t know for sure, but the image did look like him. And if it was him, why did he appear in my mind while I snoozed? Hmm. . .”
The “Luann” series, obviously is not in real time, but the comments are. Imagine if all this were live and interactive, the commenters could have written Luann’s next award-winning piece by now.
My wife said she had no imagination to play with the kids and later grandkids. We tried that game and my wife came up with nothing. But she dreamt I cheated on her and expected me to apologize for it.
She never once caught me looking at another woman so she had some imagination.
Is this a prediction that Les and Bernice are going to get together in their 30’s? Unfortunately it looks like older Bernice is giving older Les a piece of her mind LOL! But why does Luann have to scrunch her face and squint her eyes to conjure an imagination? She should stick her tongue out one side of her mouth, maybe that would help.
The problem here is not a lack of imagination but the fact that LuAnn was born after the Hippy era and she doesn’t know what to think about this couple.
I agree, the “imagination couple” look like an older Les, and an older Bernice. They’re a couple, or the imaginary archetypes of what such a couple would look like and, perhaps, interact. There are all kinds of room for imaginary speculation about that whole idea. Open the lock on that fervid brain of yours Luann!
This is a funny set of panels today though, particularly Luann’s expression in Panel 2. Lu, no face scrunching, just close your eyes and let it envision something, anything (clean since porn is not your wheelhouse, for now); that’s imagining.
I often do this in a restaurant. Observe the body language of a couple having a conversation at another table and go from there. Where do they live? are they on a first date, are they having a tryst, do they have jobs, what kind? all these questions, then surmise the answers and take it to a storyline. It’s fun!
Here’s what I see in this couple—-She is a wealthy woman, perhaps a solar panel heiress. The guy with her has just started his own crypto company and is trying to convince her to invest. Or—-perhaps this woman has just discovered that she comes from a family of witches. The guy with her is her Wizard Guide and he is introducing her to her new life and the supernatural perils all around her now that her magic powers have been awakened. What do you guys see?
I know this storyline is kinda filler, but I just started out in a writing group and I can definitely relate to Luann. It’s a fun hobby, it’s getting focused and motivated and in the mindset that makes it tricky to start out, but it’s very enjoyable to meet other writers.
Observation + imagination = inspiration; probably a slogan Tara learned in a fiction writing class; good advice, but not everyone or everything you see will stimulate your imagination. it depends on what kind of content interests you. For example, having always wanted to write an eco-thriller (others are already doing that now), I might be inspired by a wall high pile of garbage (on the sidewalk late at night) with rats running in and out while others might get ideas from people watching. Luann looks like she’s working too hard to be inspired by two people who might not be all that stimulating or inspiring to her. You can look at people to get idea for characters in your plot. I see so many people (in the big city where I live) like the couple depicted here that it could be a big yawn to me too.
Wow, she really does just throw in the towel at the slightest difficulty. Spends 3 seconds trying to imagine something and can’t, so it’s just “Welp, guess I have no imagination.” Though we should’ve seen this coming after the Date-Pic fiasco, where she gave up online dating altogether after a single bad date (where she barely even tried to think about why he might have left like that.)
Clearly, he is angry with her. She is trying to explain why it was necessary for her to spend $500 on her hat. He knows she is full of it and this is their third argument about money this week. She has no head for finances and he is a miserly sonofagun who is rethinking the entire relationship, despite his nerd girl fetish.

There’s the PROBLEM right there!
Tara expects Luann to write about people she doesn’t know.
That’s a mistake.
Look. I’ll prove it.
Now, If I were to write something like:
I dunno who these “hipsters” are, but I’ll bet I know which way they voted in the last election,” I’d probably start a Riot.
Start with writing about people you KNOW first, Lu. NOT “strangers.”
It’s easier and Safer. ;-)
