Mr. and Mrs. Edwards didn’t have any children. I have a feeling I know why.

Daughter or wife? They’re French, so it could go either way.

/// Mr. Edwards perused his wife’s drawing.

It is clear, at her mind something’s gnawing.

    Edwin calmly reviewed

    her self-portrait (a nude).

Did he like it? (Just hemming and hawing.)

/// His response, long delayed, didn’t cheer her.

“It resembles you, but should be clearer.

    It looks unreal because

    you’ve omitted your flaws.

Try again, but, this time, use a mirror.”

At first I thought this was a painting of pianist Clara Schumann and composer Johannes Brahms. They had a long friendship that lasted long after the death of her husband, composer Robert (1810 – 1856). The clothing and hairstyles in the picture were common at the time of this painting (1875).

But Clara (1819 -1896) was older than Johannes (1833 – 1897). And Brahms did not begin to adopt his signature long beard until in his forties. So their circumstances do not easily compare to the people in the painting (In any case, titled “Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Edwards”). Although there were rumors of a serious romantic relationship, the two musicians did not marry.

By the way, an intense book about Robert Schumann’s relationship and marriage to Clara Wieck is Peter F. Ostwald’s biography, “Schumann: Music and Madness.”

See also Harold C. Schonberg’s “The Great Pianists, from Mozart to the Present,” Chapter XV: “The Virtuous.”

    Mr and Mrs Edwin Edwards

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Portrait paintings by Henri Fantin-Latour" site=commons.wikimedia.org

(syntax supported by the Google, Yahoo, Bing, Duckduckgo, and Ecosia search engines) in the address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and click the first Category: found, and once there, search for the Edwards text string, and click its link for info and links that point to more info about this painting.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by merely clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s THROWBACK THURSDAY: MASTERPIECE #1432 (4/19/16) (September 28, 2022) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu. I have added a comment there pointing to the blog entry with my comment pointing to the artist info I used to point to here. So far, 6 works by this artist have been used here (7 times total, including this Throwback Thursday repeat), the April 18, 2016, strip being its first use (the 21 hyperlinks in my comment there have been deactivated, and the line breaks removed, but perhaps the text remains informative). The July 13, 2022, strip is the prior non-repeat by him.

What a passionate couple this is !/

They’re not merely “Mr. and Mrs.”/

    They radiate heat /

From their heads to their feet/

Til the floor underneath them hisses !///

    They are both incredibly hot../

Can you see it ? Perhaps you can not../

    But perchance you’ll agree/
