The great ventriloquist Edgar Bergen (Charley McCarthy, Mortimer Snerd) was a quiet guy and often found himself in a corner ignored at parties without his dummies. Used his guys as his alter ego to do things he would never dare do, like bend over and leer down the fronts of well endowed actresses. Without his dummies, he was in no way funny. He once auditioned for a radio show. Since it was radio, there was no need to use the dummies. The act fell flat. He begged to be allowed to try again but with the guys. During it, he forgot a line and called for an assistant to show him the script. As the assistant left, Charlie piped up and said, “Give me a gander at that thing,” at which the assistant stepped back and showed the dummy the script. The radio producer sat open-mouthed and gave Bergen the job.

On the old TV show “Soap”, I laughed hard at that ventriloquist and his dummy “Bob”, especially the time Bert found his head in the freezer.
