Plenty of people get rewards disproportionate to the effort they’ve put in. And vice versa.

Calvin, keep that thought. Someday you may want to run for public office.

Always take credit for the good things others have accomplished and blame your own shortcomings on someone else. It’s the American way.

One year in junior high I let the 5 kids who sat around me copy off my papers in math. The teacher, who was nearing senility, didn’t notice, and I didn’t care. It made me somewhat accepted & kept me from getting beat up.

Calvin, your problem is that you weren’t born into the right family. You should’ve been born into an ultra-rich family. Then none of that school-stuff would matter.

I suppose we don’t always learn things because we want to, but rather because other people want us to. I mean really, who actually takes a predicate nominative into account when writing. Not I.

So many people who spent their entire school years ducking, dodging, cheating and mocking education, bragging the whole time about it. Now they spend the rest of their lives griping about how unfair it is that they aren’t qualified for the “good” jobs.

One day when I was in about 2nd grade, a friend came over after school, but my mother said I couldn’t play with friend until I finished my homework. Friend had already finished hers, so I copied from her, but I didn’t stop to think about what kind of grades she usually got, and at least half of the answers that I copied were wrong. Never did that again.

Schools today are a joke. Full time babysitter! We have the most illiterate graduates today. Students in 1900 knew more by 8th grade than Seniors in High School today.First- Teach common sense! No one today has it!Second- Teach the Golden Rule- DO YOU KNOW IT?Third- Bring back spare the rod and spoil the child. Todays adults are afraid of the kids…REALLY???Fourth- A failure is being left back, not pushed through the system.Fifth- Gaming and social media are a PRIVILEDGE NOT A RIGHT. You need to earn it, not lose yourself into it. One day a year (or month) ..All systems should be shut off for the day!.Phone will only be used for voice calls ONLY! All kids and ALOT of adults would not make the first 8 Hours! Do you really need to see what your Aunt has eaten for every meal today on the twitch account? How many of the 5 can America do by New Years Eve? Should be all!!! It would a miracle to see ONE!!!!

I understand this one and agree with it to an extent, but it is based on a wrong assumption that infests our whole education system. Grades are not rewards. They are metrics. The problem, if Calvin cheated, is not that he would get rewarded without working. It’s that he would get inaccurate feedback. It would be like rigging your car so that it showed you going 75 MPH when you’re only going 20.

I used to “cheat” before going to the doctor. I knew she would check my blood sugar, so I laid off soda for a week ahead of the appointment. One time she threw an A1C on me (a different test that, in essence, measure average blood sugar over the previous 90 days). When the tests came back, she said, “Interesting. Your regular blood sugar came back normal, but your A1C is the equivalent of nearly 200 over the last 90 days. I wonder why there’s a difference?”

It wasn’t that I was busted. As she said, “When you artificially skew the results of the test, it doesn’t hurt me one bit. I get paid the same.”

I realize most people don’t approach it like that, but that’s not only why we have so much cheating in school. It is also why so much “education” (especially since No Child Left Untested) is completely useless.

I was watching the new show on Paramount – Tulsa King. Stallone’s character gave the best reason to go to college I’ve ever heard. Paraphrasing it is: Your major doesn’t matter. You go to college to prove to future employers that you can get up and show up on time and often enough to learn something. That effort is what convinces a future employer to take a chance on you. They know you are capable of learning and your responsible enough that you won’t slack off. That’s it.
