I suspect that those who complain about the half human / half sea serpent creature whose skin color changed, also complained about at least a few of the following…- M&Ms- Dr. Seuss- Mr. Potato Head- Minnie Mouse’s pantsuit- Bert & Ernie- Plant based sausage- Starbucks- Oreos- Big Bird- Uncle Ben’s- Keurig- Pizza Hut- Aunt Jemima’s- Disneyworld- NASCARFor whatever reason, these same people refer to those who disagree with them as “snowflakes”.

Do pray tell let us know what color mermaids are supposed to be. Did the high heels coming off of a piece of cartoon character in advertisements make that piece of candy taste strange to the GQP? Does the rice, the pancakes, the syrup, or the butter now taste any differently? Just what so completely offends the Republican party about any of that? Is it that they can no longer have demeaning images and slogans about characters to comfort their need for fascist and racial hatred of those different from themselves? Are they really ignorant enough and thin skinned enough snowflakes who are so very easily filled with hatred and racism because someone would dare to change an image or name or are their souls so possessed by the evils of perdition that they can be so easily triggered by a toy that can now be whatever gender a child thinks it should be? Or do they simply reject the teachings of Christ except for one entire hour or so out of their busy week of spreading fear and mistrust of things their small minds cannot manage to understand? Golly but when you ask questions like that it does make all of their continuous outrage over such trivialities sound so childish and irrational

How many drinks can you pound back in two hours to make your mind go numb?

Given that a number of states have made weed legal will weed be used during happy hour to make you happy?

What really enrages me is that Disney changed the ending, and the ultimate meaning, of this beautiful tale written by a genius, Hans Christian Andersen.

There appears to always have to be a reason to get off your face at a bar. I guess this is as good a reason as any. As far as the name of the bar is concerned – does it mean that it’s named after some kind of wing, or, as we say in Oz, a bar for winge-ers? We call someone (usually a petulant small child who complains and can’t get his/her own way) someone who winges (pron winjes). We tell them to “Stop wingeing”. Adults, by the way, do it, as a rule, as they get older.

I wonder why we don’t have any fair tales or stories from African culture (or Asian, Spanish, etc). Is it that those other cultures aren’t good enough or something? Why must we shoe-horn other ethnicities into traditional western culture roles. Isn’t that cultural appropriation?

What silly questions of course. Other cultures are not as great of course and we must elevate them by placing them in Western cultural settings in order to pretend they have always been there. Without the virtuous recasting of roles and stories to celebrate the wokeness of western culture, these other cultures would be forgotten and lost.

But. . . I can’t help but wonder why they don’t have stories of their own. . .

just for the record, St. Nicholas of Myra was a real person with a bona fide miracle under his belt, the relief of the famine in Myra, saving Romans, Christians, Jews & hittites all together. Presumably, the two tons of grain appeared in a ships hold by means similar to David Blaine. But still, he did give away all of his money & valuable pbjects after his parents were killed, run over by a drayer. Organizing the switcheroo would likely be up there on the miracle board.

David Lebovitz’s October newsletter informs us that the French have a word for frequent complaining.

“. . . .[A]s a French journalist pointed out, it’s something that brings everyone together in France and not considered a fault. And in many ways, it’s a positive trait as it means you’re exigent, or discerning and there are even special words for people who do it so frequently, it’s almost a way of life: râler and râleuse.”

According to an online translator, râler means to beyatch (spelling changd to appease GC’s AI censor).

The Little Mermaid was a “fairy tale” by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.

FWIW, among my many Danish friends are quite a few non-“white” individuals. Yes, even “black”. (Also “yellow”.)

Big surprise, there was, and perhaps still is, a conservative group that was against Mini Mouse, because she didn’t wear a shirt. Besides being a mouse, she’s a cartoon.

Sadly, there are people looking to feel important, by bringing their stupid out in the open.

Instead of discussing the race of a fictional character, how about we discuss why we still think a story where she gives up everything and he gives up nothing has a happy ending?

Disney can do whatever they chose to do. The market place will tell them if it was a smart business decision or not. Who knows, maybe they are just trying to make brownie points with some group, and will accept what they make on the movie. I know they were disappointed with the returns for the movie Lightyear.

It is interesting that so many folks get all bunched up and offended by even small efforts to take a story or make up a new one that would let a small child who is different in one way or another say that they have a positive character to look at or read about that is similar to them. Why on God’s earth would someone be so horrifically petty and cruel and vile that they would want to deprive a child of that merely to support their own hatred and prejudice and the evil they have let into and nurtured within their heart and soul?

I can (mostly) understand being irritated at changes to a favorite story; some of my friends won’t watch Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings because Tom Bombadil was omitted, for instance. It makes me wonder what percentage of those bothered by the change would have been equally bothered if they had change the hair color but not the skin color. There would certainly have been some. I also wonder how many are actually bothered and how many just like spewing outrage for any reason whatsoever.
