Republicans like to quote Heinlein’s “An armed society is a polite society” line without knowing about the “We do not have enough things to kill off the weak and the stupid these days.” line that comes after. It’s an explicit call to cull “inferior” people. Republicans have been complicit in allowing massive numbers of handguns to leach into inner city neighborhoods. There’s no shortage of guns there & no sane person would describe it as a “polite society”.
I would like to see anyone purchasing a gun to have full training in how and when to use a gun and how and when to not use a gun. Then keep them up for at least 16 hours (preferably longer) and have them go through a “Hogan’s Alley” to test their responses. If they fail, they have to wait for a month or two and then start again with the training. Most gun owners are as much a danger to society as the people they claim to be protecting us against.
