TBF Rob is commenting on the institution of the Crown and not Queen Elizabeth 2 herself. After Charles’ performance with the inkwellI think far more people will realise that they supported Elizabeth, a truly great person and not royalty per se.
And they made a mess of it and a half done job! For instance, had they exterminated all populations of western bengal and around, there would be no one suffering from Pakistan being flooded. Or look at Australia. It was supposed to be a penitentiary colony and now these inmates are having tennis tournaments! And don’t get me started on America. Since they failed to maintain their grip on the colony, it has been nothing but gun massacres in schools!
I find this totally inappropriate. If we are going to hold current leaders to account for wrongs that were done centuries ago, then let’s look at the American legacy of slavery, butchery of the Indian nations, overthrown of the Royal government of Hawaii, the Japanese internment during WWII, the Philippines. At this moment, we need to be focusing on the glorious life of this monarch and all that she accomplished during that life.
Perhaps if everyone were to work for the respect and wellbeing of everyone else by first learning empathy and then getting off of our fat behinds to make sure that becomes the new reality. How about a future where freedom and equality are not merely slogans but reality and mutual respect is the rule?
I don’t get linking Queen Elizabeth 2nd to the sins of colonialization. It’s true that she inherited colonies when she ascended the throne. It’s also true within a decade most of those colonies granted independence. If you’re going to stick her with the blame for all of England’s past colonialization, at least give her the credit for letting those countries go.
Credit where it’s due. Also blame where it’s due. QE2 was largely an irrelevancy who doesn’t deserve either. And, as an irrelevancy, she also doesn’t deserve all the attention that’s being lavished on her departure from this mortal realm. Remember who kicked off only a couple of weeks ago who did way, way more for the world than Liz ever did? That’s right, it was Mikhail Gorbachev. Where’s all the fawning over him from you weepy ones?
The British monarch is a spokesmodel who has no control over the government. Colonialism was horrible, like slavery in the US. By the 19th century the monarchy had become the vestigial, symbolic appendage it is today. Elizabeth might have been able to speak out about colonialism but maybe not. While the colonies helped finance the monarchy, the British East India company with the help of the government was the real force.

To be fair most of British empire was before her reign but she did have some stuff which lead to deaths but 90% was before her time

In Spanish, ‘King’ is pronounced “Rey”. In Spanish, Prince Charles, just became Rey Charles.

Not appropriate. It is a time to reflect on all she has done and her complete dedication to her role.

This is stupid because something similar can be used for pretty much every country when there’s a change.

We remember fondly the time she told the British public to take hydroxychloroquine and bleach enemas, and overturn legal elections, said no one, ever.

Interesting that folk are jumping on the evils of colonization.. and yet, appear to ignore the doings of the church.

We’ve done it too, and more recently.

I think that’s because the Church of England has become even less relevant than British royalty.

The Queen was largely a figurehead and had little, if any, influence on British foreign policy.
