Around here, it’s been wildfire season for a month or more… and it’s missed us. So far. “Summer’s over” has a REALLY BIG different meaning for me now than it used to!
Kids have a whole different appreciation for “end of summer” than the ones of us who are coping with hot, dry… and burning. So far, this year, right here… the wildfires have been elsewhere. But we’re due for three or four days of hot, dry and high winds starting just about … NOW. I sure would like to see quite a bit of rain. NOW!
Kids are usually excited about returning to school—new clothes, new supplies, new teachers, old friends… Of course, that wears off quickly as the grind sets in.
Children in schools are less liable to go astray than children left to their own devices. Remote learning can be a fine concept but only if children actually both have the resources and are doing the online lessons. Those are indeed serious issues. The USA simply continues to undervalue educators who will teach skills to be used over a lifetime and overvalue the ability to pass a test at the end of the semester or year.
kids going to school with some masked & some not – bringing covid home to their parents & grandparents & younger siblings, masked & unmasked, the deadly p.c. wars regarding gender, religious differences, banned books, edicts on what may & may not be taught….social skills warped by computer schooling & active shooter drills….the threat of fascist & white nationalist civil war, the possibility of nuclear destruction, ongoing war – the breakdown of the rule of law – what’s not to fear? for children?
If school isn’t here, it looms. There will always be prayer in schools. I don’t think they stopped giving pop quizzes yet. Kids still think a pop quiz is being asked about their favorite summer drink.
I think that some kids have a better attitude toward having to go to school than do others. (See, for instance, https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/2022/09/09.)

I think the cartoon is to be taken from the kid’s point of view. Freedom is replaced by the serpent of having to go to school.

School is the place that kids die like flies from lead poisoning.

I get the notion – but it’s just nostalgia. Some schools in the Indianapolis area went back at the end of July.

So school is a snake? Does Mr Danziger have an issue with education?

To people within shouting distance of the ocean, it’s the beginning of hurricane season…

Maybe it represents the snake waiting for the kids getting off vacation. (Though I’d love to know how the kid got on the swing.)

I attended a year round high school, I sure missed Summer vacations but with 3 a day football practice it didn’t much matter.

Danziger may refer to returning to school from summer vacation, but he seems rather overly negative.
