I am old, a descendent of men who served their country in times of war. And none of them, not one, would call a gun-toting rioter screaming to hang the vice-president of the United States a “patriot.” Not one of them would support any man who said, even in jest, that a woman could be grabbed by the “p###y” because a woman expected it. It saddens me to think that I will live to see our once proud Republic crumble. But I view those red hats as the equivalent of Mussolini’s “brown shirts” or Hitler’s swastika arm bands. When I hear Americans referring to other Americans as “them,” as a subhuman enemy to be disenfranchised or exterminated, or to see Americans storming our Capital to disrupt our Constitutional process, I fear I have lived too long. When Americans ignore the truth, ignore the law, indeed ignore common decency, because an election didn’t go their way, and continue to threaten violence to “enforce” their views, I see only a bleak future.
