“How did Alex Jones harm the Sandy Hook parents or their families” asks a commenter above. The legal claim was defamation, a form of slander. One element of slander is that the false statements are made, are believed, and such belief brings detriment to subjects of the statements. Alex Jones maintained, publicly and repeatedly that the Lewis family (the plaintiffs in this case), calling them by name, did not lose their child in the Sandy Hook massacre – a lie. Their grief was, said Mr. Jones, “a sham” – a lie. They were “crisis actors” – a lie. The whole Sandy Hook “incident” was “a hoax”- a lie. The Lewis’s were subsequently subjected to harassment (true) and death threats (true) for years based on Mr. Jones’ very public allegations. Mr. Jones’ “opinions” were false, he knew they were false, but he persisted in perpetuating them over the public airwaves knowing they were false. Slander, libel, or defamation are not protected “free speech.”

Accountability is rare these days. Maybe this will start a trend.

Alternative facts have made logical discourse impossible. It is possible to reason from accepted facts and at least consider each other’s viewpoint and possibly make some progress toward uniting our country. But, the right wing media has been presenting a twisted view of reality, designed to benefit the rich who own those outlets, for about 40 years now. And, in the last five years or so, the truth can’t even be twisted enough to suit their purposes, which is not a problem because their brainwashing has resulted in a number of people who will believe them when they tell out right lies.
