I cannot find any evidence that this is true. The articles I’ve seen (after brief web search) seem to say that the number of cannabis deaths has risen, but many of the deadly accidents involving cannabis also involve alcohol. And most of the ones that are more on point say that alcohol is worse in that regard.

Here’s a thought (I know Adolpf doesn’t have one unless he’s told to), don’t drive if y’all are impaired at all, no matter whether you’re impaired by drugs, alcohol (which is also a drug), road rage, hatred, or especially if y’all are being a dupe for fascists.

Typical Goodwyn. This is. Os misleading, it’s pathetic. He’s citing a study released in 2021 that shows car accident deaths involving marijuana doubled from ~4% to ~9% over a roughly 20 year period. Alcohol related deaths also doubled (~10% to ~21$ over the same period). Also, the Marijuana related deaths involved alcohol consumption. The gist of the report is that efforts to improve testing for marijuana consumption fall far below the ability to test for the presence of alcohol in impaired drivers.

The proportion of persons driving under the influence of alcohol is estimated at 2.1% (95% CI: 1.4–2.8) and under the influence of cannabis at 3.4% (2.9%-3.9%). Drivers under the influence of alcohol are 17.8 times (12.1–26.1) more likely to be responsible for a fatal accident, and the proportion of fatal accidents which would be prevented if no drivers ever exceeded the legal limit for alcohol is estimated at 27.7% (26.0%-29.4%). Drivers under the influence of cannabis multiply their risk of being responsible for causing a fatal accident by 1.65 (1.16–2.34), and the proportion of fatal accidents which would be prevented if no drivers ever drove under the influence of cannabis is estimated at 4.2% (3.7%-4.8%). An increased risk linked to opiate use has also been found to be significant, but with low prevalence, requiring caution in interpreting this finding. Other groups of narcotics have even lower prevalence, and the associated extra risks cannot be assessed.

Almost a decade separates the present study from a similar one previously conducted in France, and there have been numerous developments in the intervening years. Even so, the prevalence of drivers responsible for causing fatal accidents under the influence of alcohol or narcotics has stayed remarkably stable, as have the proportion of fatal accidents which could in theory be prevented if no drivers ever exceeded the legal limits. The overall number of deaths from traffic accidents has dropped sharply during this period, and the number of victims attributable to alcohol and/or cannabis declined proportionally. Alcohol remains the main problem in France. It is just as important to note that one in two drivers considered to be under the influence of cannabis was also under the influence of alcohol. With risks cumulating between the two, it is particularly important to point out the danger of consuming them together.

And? This is a statistic without context. It’s also not surprising. As states legalize marijuana use the portion of impaired drivers is going to increase. If we lowered the age of drinking, the same ting would occur.

Pot doesn’t kill, bad driving does.

I usually think Al is spot on but this is the exception to the rule.

Not an issue unless some hop head or drunk takes out other innocent drivers or bystanders. Otherwise I consider ‘evolution in action’. Gotta love Niven and Pournelle.

As soon as I clicked on this, I figured that most comments would be negative. I’m one of those who is absolutely against legalizing Marijuana. Anyone who says they can drive just fine after having smoked weed, is as delusional as someone who has had too much alcohol. Weed is also a gateway drug for the harder stuff, as many addicts have said it was for them. I never tried the stuff because I don’t need drugs to make me feel good. Oh, and I don’t feel the need to consume alcohol, either. I consider it a problem if someone needs to drink or do drugs in order to have a good time. Yes, I know I’m in the minority, but this is just the way I feel.

Drink a fifth of alcohol and die of acute alcohol poisoning, alcohol is a thousand times more harmful than cannabis.

I concur.

As a probation officer for 32 years it does not surprise me that pot is up there with booze in traffic deaths. during the latter half of my career as a PO, many of my clients were charge with possession of pot or when drug tested they used pot prior to being tested. Set up more problems then they are worth.

Can an outright blatant lie still be considered “freedom of speech”? This cartoon must be removed.
