As I programmer, I’m always petrified when I think about how well the software I’ve written is tested (yes, some), knowing that modern life depends on software to continue working at all. Some of my code went to Mars, which is very very cool. Some of it could be found in heart monitors… Scary.

At least he was standing there watching it. If he had left the room, it could have caught fire. I threw away one toaster because it became defective in this way.

It is beginning to look like some rides at county fairs should not be touched. When they are moved from one county to another, mistakes can be made while putting them together.

Being an ex-collector of toasters, my earliest being 1907 models. I am surprised more homes didn’t burn down and more people permanently scarred from the burns. I have one left, an all ceramic 2 slice. Sold most to collectors in Australia

I remember when my brother (very like Calvin) decided to butter his bread before putting it in the toaster. Margarine causes grease fires.

It’s usually user error. Or manufacturing error. Either way, it’s almost always a human’s fault.

It’s not the fault of the toaster. There is this little tray on the bottom that you have to pull out and empty the crumbs once in a while. Not everyone knows that.

I’d rather board an airplane than make toast. If something screws up with the plane, at least it won’t have been my fault.

The “darkness” knob on the toaster has a very fine distinction between “untoasted” and “blackened.” If you crank it all the way up I imagine it will set fire to your house.

Someone said Isaac Asimov wouldn’t get on an airplane. I worked almost 40 years in the aircraft industry. I worked mainly in helicopters. I won’t fly in a commercial airliner. It’s not the initial build that bothers me. The quality of the initial build is very good. Some of you may jump on the V-22 Osprey that crashed in the Potomic early on in the program. The bobble head news things on TV made much of the fact that it came apart. It did, by design. So that troops involved in a wrecked aircraft could get out. When my Dad was a teenager, he and a friend drove people non-stop from St. Louis to Los Angeles, then carried people from Los Angeles to St. Louis. The reason? A lot of people were afraid to ride a train.
