El Garces railroad depot, hotel, and restaurant in Needles, California, around the turn of the 20th century. The facility, opened in 1908, was named after Padre Francisco Garcés, a noted Franciscan Spanish priest who made several journeys through the region in 1771 and 1774 en route between southern Arizona and the California Missions. Closed in 1958, restored in 2014
When railroads became transcontinental in the late 1800’s, Fred Harvey made a brilliant move. He built beautiful restaurants at the railroad stops so passengers would have someplace to dine. He hired a brilliant architect, Mary Coulter. She also designed some of the Grand Canyon buildings. The Harvey Houses were considered works of art in their day. You can see one called La Posada in Winslow, Arizona. It’s been restored to all its glory.
The Harvey House was owned by a pooka. You know, ""P O O K A – Pooka – from old Celtic mythology – a fairy spirit in animal form – always very large. The pooka appears here and there – now and then – to this one and that one – a benign but mischievous creature – very fond of rumpots, crackpots, and how are you, Mr. Wilson?" “How are you, Mr. Wilson?” (tyvm IMDB)
Lucy must have a double insurance policy when it comes to communication. She can bring misery when she enters and never forgets to do it again when she exits.
Coincidentally I just listened to a podcast a couple weeks ago that did a segment on the history of the Harvey House. My eyes really lit up when I saw today’s strip.

Snoopy, did Spike work with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway? And did he do a song and dance act with Judy Garland?

For those who don’t know what a “Harvey House” is, here’s a link to a preview of “The Harvey Girls” starring Judy Garland, 1946.
