No, no, no, righties. Your own republican leadership advocated using Taliban tactics against democratic policies earlier this year. Remember them calling themselves insurgents? They said they should use some tactics from the Taliban playbook cuz anything goes cuz Democrats are terrorists every bit as dangerous as Islamic fundamentalists.
So, brad, ooooooooo your political faction equated itself with this very enemy when it suited them to think of themselves as freedom fighters.
ANandy, no one favors indoctrination. It’s just that really “conservative” people, fundies if you will, always think that ideas and progress indoctrinates and threatens them.
Seriously, though. Years from now, I think conservatives will be embarrassed that so many of them made so much noise over this. Of course President Obama (or any president, for that matter) should be allowed to address the nation’s children. To “shield” them from such is attempting to shield them from civil discourse and democracy. The President had a good and uplifting message. Even Newt Gingrich said so.
the greatest debaters had to study both sides of an issue -
how will we teach our kids how to listen, to think for themselves, to research, how to discern truth, how to make decisions based on facts rather than on emotions if we shield them from things -we- fear?
will they appreciate and weigh for themselves diversity of opinion and of politics in order to conclude intelligently? i pray that no amount of hiding will shame the children when they grow up.

tpenna, I doubt very much any of those who held their children out of school will be embarrassed by it years from now. I don’t see enough critical thinking skills or their part, or intellectual curiosity, for that matter, that would allow them to have that level of self-reflection.

The cartoon is saying, not that the right is quoting the Taliban (which is not the same as al Qaeda) but that they are making the same complaints and arguments independent of each other. That IS significant.
Actually buzz and Edzeb, I’m not a righty, or a lefty. I was merely making the point that these guys are running out of original things to say, and they are becoming no more than bumper stickers. And here you guys are congratulating them for it. Need I remind you it’s not that hard to draw parallels with the lefties as well. As long as people like you and Glen Beck continue to approach things from an emotional standpoint, this country will stay in the rut it’s been in for the last eighty years.
